As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: When the fan-made poster for the upcoming movie musical featuring me as Elphaba alongside Ariana Grande’s Glinda was shared on social media, mimicking the original musical’s design with my character’s hat casting a shadow over her face except for her mouth, I couldn’t help but respond. The creativity behind the edit is commendable, and it’s always exciting to see fans engaged in our work!
Cynthia posted on her October 16 Instagram Story: ‘This is the most outlandish and disrespectful thing I’ve ever encountered.’ She accompanied a manipulated poster with this comment, linking it to inappropriate comments she’s received about her green skin from the movie. ‘Nothing about this is amusing. Nothing about it is endearing. It undermines me. It undermines us.’
She went on to say, “The initial post is an ILLUSTRATION. However, I am a REAL LIFE INDIVIDUAL, and I purposefully gazed straight into the camera at you, the audience, as our eyes can convey messages without the need for words.
The Tony winner also took a moment to differentiate between the film and the musical.
She clarified, “Our poster pays tribute, not copies,” before stating, “altering my features and concealing my eyes feels like eliminating my identity. That’s truly painful.
In response to her narrative, Cynthia added a slide showcasing the movie’s poster. Much like the original Broadway play where Glinda leans towards Elphaba, this poster is a picture of Ariana and Cynthia, with Cynthia gazing straight into the lens.
Cynthia concurred, highlighting how they took care to back each other up during the entire filming period.
Cynthia clarified, ‘What we truly sought was a genuine bond.’ She added, ‘We wanted to guide it with affection, even during the parts that were meant to be filled with emotional strain in the composition.’
Regarding Ariana, she mentioned, ‘We’ll both have times when we require personal space. Yet, since our affection for one another is profound, it’s all right.’
