Wicked Star Suggests Every Main Character Is Queer Sparks Fan Shock

As soon as the trailer was released, eagle-eyed fans immediately spotted something. Now, these very same enthusiasts are thrilled by a fresh theory that Marissa Bode, the actress playing Nessarose, has recently proposed.

The widely recognized fact about the “Wicked” series is that it subtly explores lesbian themes between Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande). However, Bode believes there’s a deeper layer to this, and she expressed her thoughts on TikTok. Her hypothesis suggests that every significant character in the story identifies as queer.

In the world of ‘Wicked’, Glinda, Elphaba, Nessarose, Fiyero, Boq, and Doctor Dillamond are portrayed as having diverse sexual orientations. Glinda is lesbian, Elphaba is bisexual, and so are Nessarose and Fiyero. Boq is questioning his identity but leans towards being queer. As for Doctor Dillamond, he’s gay. Madame Morrible is a lesbian who was deeply in love once, but something unfortunate happened to her lover, which may explain her current character. The Wizard also seems to be questioning his sexuality and identifies as queer.”

And, just for fun: “In the magical land of ‘Wicked’, Glinda’s a lesbian, Elphaba’s bisexual, Nessarose and Fiyero share the same orientation, Boq is on a journey to discover his identity but he’s definitely queer in some way, and Doctor Dillamond is out and proud. Madame Morrible had a love once that was taken away from her, which might explain her complex personality. And as for the Wizard? Well, let’s just say he’s got some questions about his sexuality too.

It’s undeniable that have had a significant influence on the LGBTQ+ community for quite some time now. Judy Garland emerged as a symbol for the gay community following the release of her movie, with many gay men referring to themselves as “friends of Dorothy.” Additionally, there are many who believe that the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda goes beyond friendship.

In the original book of “Wicked,” I mustn’t forget to mention that there are kisses shared between the two main characters. Author Gregory Maguire designed their relationship to carry a subtle yet undeniable romantic undertone. He once explained to a magazine in 2024, “The romance was intentional, and it was delicate, subdued, and sophisticated enough for one to surmise that one of those young women harbored deeper feelings than the other, but chose not to express them.”

He continued, “Perhaps, when the lights were out, and the author stepped outside for a smoke in the alley, those two girls found themselves exploring more than just a friendship in the bed on their journey to the Emerald City.

Wicked Has A Very Queer Cast

A significant number of the principal actors in both productions of “Wicked” and its spin-off “For Good” identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Notably, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, and Bronwyn James are openly queer, while Bode herself is also included in this group. Cynthia Erivo has been open about the show’s queer themes during promotional events.

In 2024, when the initial movie was about to be released, she subtly suggested that perhaps the cinematic characters might eventually embrace each other romantically. She said, “Perhaps with a bit more time, it’s just a deep love that overcomes everything, including sexuality.

Wicked: For Good is out Nov. 21, 2025.
