As a longtime fan myself, I can’t help but associate Wil Wheaton with his beloved character, Wesley Crusher. His recent reprisals of the role in “Star Trek: Picard,” “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” and “Star Trek: Prodigy” have only solidified this connection for me, transporting us back to the days of the USS Enterprise.
Despite the series ending over 30 years ago, he maintains the strongest bond with his co-stars. On a recent talk show appearance, Wheaton shared how these actors continue to significantly impact his life, serving as parental figures during his youth. “Sometimes I felt compelled to reach out to them,” he explained. “This is an unusual feeling. Everyone has parents. Every child has a mother and a father. And you long to share significant moments with them. So when that urge arises, I message my Star Trek comrades instead.
Prior to making an official announcement about his Storytime Podcast, Wheaton reached out to several of his Star Trek co-stars, such as Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner. However, one response in particular from a specific cast member touched him deeply. “Before we unveiled [it], I messaged LeVar because this podcast doesn’t exist without him,” the actor stated about his co-star.
Wheaton Is Grateful For His Star Trek Family
“I texted him and I said, ‘I just want you to know that we’re announcing [it] today, and I’m excited and kind of nervous. But this wouldn’t exist without you. This wouldn’t exist if you hadn’t believed in me, if you hadn’t said I want you to do this. This wouldn’t exist if you hadn’t said, How can I help?’ Thank you for being there for me when you didn’t know that you were., Wheaton recalled.
Later on, Wheaton disclosed that it was Burton who phoned him upon receiving the text message. In his own words, “[He] expressed how proud he was of me. He stated, ‘I couldn’t simply send a text. I needed to hear your voice,'” the actor continued. This conversation was one of the two instances where Wheaton felt paternal affection.
He expressed, “On two occasions in my existence, I’ve sensed what I presume is the sensation of parental love and approval. The first time was during an episode on ‘Ready Room,’ when he conveyed his pride in me and affection for the production. Last night, it was LeVar who made me feel that way.
Wheaton placed the phone aside, wrapping his arms around himself, sitting still, and reflecting, saying to himself, ‘Take note of this sensation. Embrace it, savor it, let it course through your body, and feel it in your heart and limbs.’ There was a sense of joy and acceptance that washed over him, and he thought, ‘This is as close as you’ll ever get, pal. So cherish that feeling.’
