Following the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in Season 1 of Ahsoka, there are whispers that the Star Wars show’s second season might bring back another significant character from the prequel trilogy. According to Kristian Harloff, there is speculation that Natalie Portman could be rejoining the franchise to portray Padmé once more. Harloff hinted on his podcast that Ahsoka’s showrunner, Dave Filoni, is making a concerted effort to bring this specific character back. “It seems like it’s getting close… I don’t believe a contract has been signed yet, but it appears to be near, and it seems like in Ahsoka, Natalie Portman could reappear,” Harloff said.
Harloff proposed that if Portman were cast, it could indicate a scenario similar to the “World Between Worlds.” He explained that with Ewan McGregor and young Ahsoka involved, it seems likely they would explore this concept, and given previous rumors, Filoni might want her. However, as reported by Star Wars News Net, Portman is not currently in talks for a return to the series.
Natalie Portman portrayed Padmé Amidala in all three movies of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, but she hasn’t taken on the role since 2005’s “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”. Even though it’s been twenty years since we last saw her in a galaxy far, far away, the actress has expressed interest in reprising the character if the right opportunity arises. In 2023, she mentioned that no one had approached her about returning. However, when her director for “Thor: Love and Thunder”, Taika Waititi, asked her if she wanted to be part of a Star Wars movie he’s working on, she playfully reminded him that she played Padmé in the past.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Ahsoka Season 2, but unfortunately, there’s no set date for it yet. Word on the street is that they’re aiming to start filming somewhere around April. And here’s some exciting news: Rory McCann from Game of Thrones has joined the cast! He’ll be bringing Baylan Skoll to life on screen, stepping into the shoes left vacant by the late Ray Stevenson. Can’t wait to see what unfolds!
I, as a fan, am eagerly anticipating more exploration of the World Between Worlds in Ahsoka Season 2. In the first season’s climactic episode “Part Five: Shadow Warrior,” I delved into this mystical realm and faced trials that included reliving Clone Wars battles from my past. Given the positive response to this episode, it seems likely that we might revisit the World Between Worlds again, offering a chance for Filoni and his team to present more Clone War-era flashbacks, providing insight into my youth. It would also be exciting to see me interact with friends like Obi-Wan and Padmé in live-action, as these relationships could offer a unique perspective on my character while enhancing the storyline. Just as we saw the World Between Worlds used effectively in Season 1 to delve into my psyche and develop my connections with other characters, I believe this approach could continue to enrich the series for fans.
The challenge lies in ensuring that the character of Padmé Amidala’s return feels authentic and not just a nostalgic nod for fans of the prequel trilogy. Star Wars has been known to lean on fan service, but it would be disappointing if Rosario Dawson’s long-anticipated reprisal of Portman’s role in the series lacked substance. The success of “Part Five: Shadow Warrior” wasn’t solely due to its live-action Clone Wars segments; rather, it was a significant moment for Ahsoka within the narrative flow of the show, and having Anakin teach her an essential lesson made sense given their history. If Filoni is indeed making a concerted effort to bring Portman back, this may indicate that Padmé’s presence is crucial to the plot. Should these rumors prove true (and fans should approach them with caution for now), it will be intriguing to see how her character interacts within Ahsoka Season 2.
