Before saying goodbye to Reverend Will Davenport of Grantchester, we had already gathered plenty of tissues, as hinted by the cast and main writer about the emotional intensity of Tom Brittney’s final scenes.
Producer and writer Daisy Coulam also mentioned that everyone was just as emotional off-camera, “Everyone was quite tearful behind the scenes as well.
In real life, Robson Green shares friendship with Brittney, and during their interaction, he playfully mentioned he’s “still undergoing therapy” due to her exit from the show. However, his comments later became more heartfelt.
He expressed that our experience wasn’t just about being in the spotlight, but also about what happened off-camera. The camaraderie we shared during filming was truly exceptional, and parting ways with such friendship is incredibly difficult on an emotional level because it feels like saying farewell to a cherished companion.
As I stood there on that fateful day, bidding Tom farewell, no acting was needed – the raw emotion was palpable. The crew and I were already in tears before the cameras even began to roll. It was an emotionally taxing day, one that tested our resilience. Indeed, it was a challenge unlike any other. Yet, amidst the tears and turmoil, there was something undeniably beautiful about that scene, a poignant goodbye that will linger in our hearts forever.
Initially, there was no trace of that emotion when Will summoned the bravery to inform Geordie about his decision to relocate for a fresh job opportunity in Newcastle.
“Right,” said the detective without a hint of emotion.
“Just ‘right’?” asked Will, who was perplexed by his response, or lack thereof.
“What else do you want me to say?” he responded, matter-of-factly.
Indeed, Geordie seemed troubled, yet he concealed his true emotions skillfully, causing Will to ponder whether he actually cared or not.

It’s important to note that the detective was caught off guard with Will’s revelation, as it came during an ongoing investigation. Moreover, Geordie believed that Will had previously declined the offer because he was happy in his current situation and did not wish to disrupt his children’s lives.
In the ordinary course of events, I would have expected things to carry on as they were. However, Will’s sudden change of mind came unexpectedly and quite uncomfortably, like an unfamiliar turn in a familiar path.
However, instead of maintaining a mature approach, his interactions with the vicar soon transformed into immature tantrums, teetering on harshness. Despite Will’s persistent efforts to smooth things over, he spent most of the following days stubbornly avoiding the issue.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked the detective in yet another effort to smooth things over.
“Talk about what?” he said, playing the fool.
Despite Will’s pleading gaze with puppy-dog eyes, Geordie found himself unable to meet them, thus rendering their persuasive power ineffective.
No matter how passionately Will declared his affection for Grantchester or how vehemently he argued for their departure, Geordie had no interest – and, in an unusually harsh manner, denied Will his approval.
In the familiar town of Grantchester, Will, who’s experienced his fair share of heartache after battling mental health issues during season 8, found Geordie’s persistent rejections, more so considering Geordie’s upcoming departure, among the most painful experiences he’s endured.
However, even though Geordie’s actions presented an unflattering image, the detective’s sorrow was profound as he grappled with the thought of a world without Will, who had transcended the role of friend and became almost like kin to him.
Although it’s indefensible how Geordie treated Will after his announcement, and affection doesn’t excuse disrespectful actions – the fact that he struggled to accept Will’s departure stemmed from deep-seated feelings of love for him, which had transformed into a protective, paternal emotion over time.
And during their final ever scene together, we saw the extent of that.
While Will and Bonnie were departing the village, the vicar hadn’t managed to bid farewell to Geordie yet. Friends and family had assembled outside their home to see them off on a new adventure, displaying both tears and smiles due to the mixed emotions of the situation, but there was no sign of the detective.
Bonnie encouraged him, speaking much like a friend from a romantic comedy would, urging him to reveal his true feelings to the person he loves, before it’s too late,” said Bonnie.
“Changing the world can wait a little bit.”
With an instinctive awareness of each other, Will knew precisely where Geordie would be, much like the familiarity between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. As they approached, the music growing louder, it felt almost as if they were in a romantic scene, reminiscent of when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy walked towards Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Bennet.
This special moment, filled with heartfelt emotion due to the sincere bond between Green and Brittney, not only reflects the intensity of their affection towards each other, but also underscores how deep, meaningful platonic relationships can be just as captivating and impactful as romantic ones, which are often emphasized more frequently in media.
It’s still somewhat surprising to see two men, without being romantically involved, expressing such openness and vulnerability towards each other.
Geordie expressed his gratitude by saying, “It’s like finding a lifesaver in me meeting you, Will.” He went on to say, “You’re my lifesaver. You rescued me when I was drowning. When times were tough, when I felt lost, you saved me. And I can’t thank you enough. I am incredibly grateful for what you’ve done.
I give you my approval for whatever path you choose in life. That’s the message I’m conveying.
Ultimately, Geordie’s reluctance to accept Will leaving softened when he understood that his decision wasn’t about their friendship or the idea that Grantchester wasn’t enough for him. As a vicar, Will had largely lived a content and fulfilling life there, save for one exception, and his bond with Geordie played a significant role in this, making it hard for him to leave.
However, Will felt a stronger pull towards a greater duty, something that resonated deeply with his role as a religious figure, and although Geordie was deeply saddened by the prospect, he understood in his core that he must grant his approval.
If you didn’t feel a tear well up as the couple affectionately expressed their love, Coulam still had one more heartwarming gesture in store.
“I hope I made you proud,” said a teary-eyed Will in what would be his final ever line on the show.
Each day, Geordie would smile, reminiscent of the parting scene in Fast & Furious 7 where Brian and Dominic’s paths split apart. After exchanging their goodbyes, they each moved on their own paths.
Fans of Grantchester would prefer for the paths of Will and Geordie to stay intertwined. However, if separation is inevitable, this is a proper farewell.
