Will Civilization VII Run Smoothly on Your Favorite Gaming Handheld?

Can I play Civilization 7 on Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and other gaming handhelds?

In a recent announcement on Steam’s community page, it has been confirmed that Civilization 7 is set to launch with compatibility verification for Steam Deck. This implies that the game should function smoothly across all gaming handheld devices. While I haven’t personally tested Civilization 7’s performance on my Steam Deck yet, I plan to include my findings in my review once the non-disclosure agreement expires on February 3, 2025.

According to Civilization 7’s official compatibility notice on Steam Deck, Valve has approved its operation with default settings, such as the standard controls (with controller images shown), clear game text, and acceptable default graphic performance.

This ought to work seamlessly on various well-known portable gaming devices like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go as well.

Civilization 7 PC recommended hardware

On the Steam page for Civilization VII, you can find the system requirements for both Windows and SteamOS/Linux. Notably, these specifications are quite similar. To begin, let me outline the minimum requirements:

1. For Windows:
– Operating System: 64-bit Windows 7, 8, or 10
– Processor: Intel Core i3 or AMD Athlon II X2 280 processor or equivalent
– Memory: 4 GB RAM
– Graphics: 512 MB GeForce 8800GT / Radeon HD 6950 or better
– DirectX: Version 11
– Storage: 15 GB available space

2. For SteamOS/Linux:
– Operating System: SteamOS or Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04
– Processor: Intel Core i3 or AMD Athlon II X2 280 processor or equivalent
– Memory: 4 GB RAM
– Graphics: 512 MB GeForce 8800GT / Radeon HD 6950 or better
– Storage: 15 GB available space

On a PC, Firaxis recommends a minimum processor such as the Intel Core i5-4690, the Intel Core i3-10100, or the AMD Ryzen 3 1200. The game requires at least 8GB of memory (RAM). For graphics cards, you’ll want an NVIDIA GTX 1050, Intel Arc A390, or AMD RX 460. The game will take approximately 20GB of storage space on your hard drive.

The suggested requirements for Civilization VII on PC involve a CPU such as the Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, along with graphics cards like the NVIDIA RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 6600, or Intel Arc A750. You’ll also need 16GB of RAM for this game. For SteamOS/Linux users, you’ll require a minimum of 25GB of free hard drive space and a slightly improved GPU performance up to an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580.

Given the impressive processing capabilities of today’s portable gaming devices for PC – with advanced AMD APUs taking center stage even without a separate GPU – I am confident that my Steam Deck will perform smoothly during testing.

What is Civilization 7?

The highly anticipated seventh installment of the renowned Sid Meier series, Civilization, is set for release on February 11, 2025. This upcoming title will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch platforms.

As a tech enthusiast, I couldn’t help but get excited when the gameplay for Civilization 7 was first unveiled in mid-2024. Unlike its predecessor, Civilization 6, which felt like an improved version of Civilization 5, Civ 7 introduces some substantial changes that set it apart from its predecessors.

In simpler terms, leaders aren’t restricted to specific cultures anymore. Instead, after each phase, all players get a brief break, during which they can select a new civilization to guide through the current stage. This approach makes the game more enjoyable and offers numerous fresh strategies that can be adapted according to your opponents’ moves.

The latest Commander Units for air, land, and sea significantly simplify the process of waging war, offering considerable advantages on both open battlefields and at home. For a comprehensive analysis of these alterations, I recommend you take a look at my Civilization 7 preview, written after spending 20 hours playing the game.
