Will Ferrell Revives Buddy the Elf in Entirely Unexpected Way (And We’re Traumatized)

As a long-time admirer of Will Ferrell and his exceptional comedic talents, I must say that his recent surprise appearance as Buddy the Elf at the Los Angeles Kings game was nothing short of delightful. It’s been over two decades since the original Elf graced our screens, and it seems that Buddy has aged just like us mere humans – albeit with a touch of ironic humor, as evidenced by Ferrell’s slightly rougher portrayal this time around.

Being a fan who grew up watching Elf during the holiday season, I can attest to the impact that Buddy the Elf has had on my life – from his innocent charm and infectious energy to the countless times I found myself quoting his famous lines. So, seeing Ferrell don the iconic red suit and oversized ears once more brought a sense of nostalgia and joy that was difficult to put into words.

While it’s unfortunate that an Elf 2 sequel never came to fruition, I can appreciate Ferrell’s decision to keep Buddy’s story intact on the big screen rather than milking the character for all it’s worth. Instead, we get these delightful surprises like his courtside appearance at the L.A. Kings game – a perfect reminder of why we fell in love with Buddy in the first place.

Lastly, I couldn’t help but chuckle when I saw Ferrell’s beer in hand and unlit cigarette – just another example of how Buddy manages to find humor even in the most unexpected places. If you haven’t yet had a chance to witness this magical moment for yourself, I highly recommend giving it a watch. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

In an unexpected twist, comedian Will Ferrell reprised his iconic role as Elf’s Buddy, not on screen but in a live appearance. Known for making Elf a modern Christmas staple with Buddy being one of his most memorable characters, Ferrell made a sudden comeback to the public eye during the last Los Angeles Kings basketball game before the 2024 holiday season. Amidst the crowd and holding a beer in one hand and an unlit cigarette in the other, he chose to wear Buddy’s full Elf costume for his spontaneous return to the role in reality.

As a long-time fan of Will Ferrell, I couldn’t help but notice his latest appearance as Buddy the Elf during the recent game broadcast. Having grown up watching Ferrell in his iconic role in “Elf,” it was fascinating to see him take on a more rugged version of Buddy. Given my extensive knowledge of Ferrell’s comedic style, I believe he was going for some ironic humor by contrasting the wildly energetic, child-like Buddy from the movie with his current, much grittier portrayal. It’s clear that Ferrell has a knack for finding creative ways to keep audiences entertained, and this latest twist on Buddy is no exception. I can’t wait to see what he does next!

Compared to other elves, Buddy ages more like a human, and in the 21 years since the release of Elf, Will Ferrell appears noticeably older, especially after taking on the role of fatherhood with Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) at the end of the 2003 movie. Regardless, Ferrell’s unexpected comeback as Buddy is quite a surprising revisit to the character, indeed.

In 2003, the movie “Elf” unfolds the tale of Buddy, a character who was inadvertently transported to the North Pole by Santa Claus (Ed Asner) as a baby while in his bag of toys. Raised as an elf, Buddy later discovers he’s human and sets out for New York City to find his biological father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan). The ensuing tale becomes a riotous comedy as Buddy, who knows nothing about life outside the North Pole, struggles to adapt in the bustling city.

The original “Elf” movie became a massive sensation during its release, leading New Line Cinema to eagerly consider a sequel, titled “Elf 2”. However, Will Ferrell’s hesitance to reprise his role has been the primary reason why “Elf 2” hasn’t materialized. Not even a $29 million offer managed to convince Ferrell to return, making it unlikely that we’ll ever see “Elf 2”.

It appears that Ferrell’s on-court portrayal of Buddy the Elf at the L.A. Kings game suggests he might be open to reprising his role as Buddy again, albeit not necessarily for an “Elf 2” movie. However, it seems that Ferrell, a veteran of Saturday Night Live, is willing to make some spontaneous real-life appearances as Buddy to create a bit of surprise and excitement.

Elf is currently streaming on Max and Hulu.
