As a devoted fan and critic, I’m thrilled that the captivating fifth season of ITV’s drama Grace has finally made its way onto our screens. The return of beloved characters such as Roy, Glenn, and Cleo is undoubtedly a delight for fans like myself. However, there’s one noticeable absence from this year’s cast list that leaves me pondering the storyline’s direction – a key character conspicuously missing from the ensemble.
Last year, actor Craig Parkinson, who plays the character Norman on the series, shared that he’d be leaving after the fourth season. In the fourth season itself, Norman’s character was shown receiving a cancer diagnosis.
norman, who was joyfully marking the conclusion of another case in the season finale, was conspicuously absent in the opening episode of season 5. The only reference to his character surfaced during a dialogue between Roy and Bella, where Roy enquired if Bella had received any news from Norman. Bella replied negatively, evidently upset and annoyed by this unresolved issue.
In other words, Campbell explained, “I’m not convinced. You see, the world depicted in our books and real-life police work is dynamic – people constantly join and leave. Norman, as a character, remains, but Bella, portrayed by Laura Elphinstone, is no longer part of it. We decided to keep Bella.
Instead of the characters appearing and disappearing in the books, we introduce individuals who perform particular tasks for us, such as LPR checks, among other duties. In my opinion, this dynamic is what officers find appealing about that world.

Campbell further explained, “We’ve deliberately decided to move forward in this manner. We’ve acknowledged that Norman is no longer part of the picture, and there’s a certain shadow cast over it regarding Bella, yet we’re essentially focusing on that point as our boundary.
In other words, Tapper expressed her hope that the show would delve into what happens next for Bella following Norman’s departure.
It seems clear she’s faced significant challenges in her private life, and it’ll be intriguing to observe how these experiences might shape her future path,” Tapper noted.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can tell you that just because Norman wasn’t featured in the latter part of Season 5, it doesn’t rule out his potential appearance in future episodes. In fact, considering the series has been greenlit for a sixth season and filming is set to begin soon, there’s always a chance we might see him again on our screens.
Simultaneously, both John Simm (Roy’s star) and Peter James (author of the Roy Grace series) have hinted at discussions about the potential longevity of the show, implying that it might extend beyond the stories already written by James.
