As a longtime Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of these characters from comic books to the silver screen, I must admit that the portrayal of Taskmaster in Black Widow left me a tad perplexed. The lack of dialogue and charisma in the character felt like a missed opportunity for Marvel Studios to truly bring this fan-favorite villain to life.
The initial trailer for Marvel’s upcoming movie, “Thunderbolts,” was released this week, providing fans with an initial glimpse of the team and the updated costumes that certain characters will be wearing. One notable character receiving a significant upgrade in the new MCU film is Olga Kurylenko’s Antonia Dreykov, better known as Taskmaster, who last appeared in the MCU during the “Black Widow” movie. Although Marvel Studios generally excels at adapting Marvel Comics characters, there was some vocal criticism following the introduction of the MCU version of Taskmaster in 2021. With Kurylenko’s character now being heavily promoted for “Thunderbolts,” it seems that Marvel may be altering their portrayal of Taskmaster.
Why was Taskmaster controversial in Black Widow?
Prior to the debut of the “Black Widow” standalone film, it was revealed that Taskmaster, a beloved Marvel antagonist, would be among the adversaries. In the comic book world, Taskmaster is a mercenary known for his witty demeanor and unique ability to mimic any fighting style or move he witnesses. He can switch between being formidable and amusing, with his distinctive skull mask serving as an identifier and his mood fluctuating dramatically from humorous to relentless within the pages of a single comic panel.
In the movie “Black Widow,” the character of Taskmaster is portrayed to some extent. The on-screen Taskmaster retains the quick reflexes of the original character, but with certain creative liberties taken by the MCU. However, this version of Taskmaster has strong connections to Natasha Romanoff’s broader narrative. Due to alterations in the character’s backstory, which links her more closely to the Red Room and its agents, the Taskmaster in the film speaks very little and exhibits minimal personality. The inclusion of Taskmaster in “Black Widow” fits well with the storyline of the movie, and even changing the character to female feels like a change that preserves their essence. However, among Marvel fans, this representation of Taskmaster has sparked some confusion.
In simpler terms, seeing Taskmaster’s abilities portrayed effectively in live-action was great, but the decision to make the character nearly mute, lacking charm or individuality felt like a missed opportunity for Marvel to fully explore the character’s potential. Within the context of Black Widow, this aspect is crucial to Natasha and her family’s personal growth as they uncover their past manipulations by the Red Room and seek escape; however, it leaves us wondering why Taskmaster was included in such a way if it meant changing the character fundamentally.
Following its debut, Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Taskmaster drew mixed reactions from some Marvel enthusiasts when compared to Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Others observed a resemblance to the treatment of The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, although it should be noted that the twist on that character was integral to the plot and the unexpected nature of the storyline made it worthwhile. Given the reception to the alteration of The Mandarin, could we see a similar reversal with Taskmaster, considering fan preferences?
How Thunderbolts* could fix Taskmaster
Fans of Marvel may remember that at the conclusion of Black Widow, Taskmaster, along with other ex-agents from the Red Room, was liberated from their mind control methods. Since this film occurred after the events in Captain America: Civil War and before Avengers: Infinity War, there’s a significant time gap between when we last saw MCU’s Taskmaster on screen and when Thunderbolts unfolds in the timeline. Consequently, it appears that Taskmaster has been exploring the world during this period and may have evolved off-screen to meet fan expectations. We can see they’ve already sported a new outfit, so that’s some development.
Furthermore, each member of the Thunderbolts squad exhibits a touch of aggression, so if Taskmaster reappears without any distinctive dialogue that sets them apart (in an unfavorable manner), it could be problematic. However, this doesn’t mean that Taskmaster should enter the scene in the ‘Thunderbolts’ series spouting one-liners like Deadpool or with a comical approach. Instead, as a character who has broken free from her father’s control and whose abilities lie in mimicking other characters, it seems plausible that she might offer insightful comments about her teammates and their tactics. The Taskmaster in the MCU appears to excel in the sinister corners of the MCU’s spy network. Here’s hoping they effectively portray this aspect in ‘Thunderbolts’.
MCU’s Thunderbolts team explained
This team of characters on the Thunderbolts stands out for two significant reasons. Initially, they are all outsiders who don’t seem to fit neatly into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storyline. This observation is not just a casual assessment but a reflection of their uncertain roles following their past appearances. Characters like Red Guardian, US Agent, Yelena, Bucky, Ghost, and Taskmaster were all left in somewhat ambiguous positions, not due to lack of interest or utility, but because there was no clear place for them within the narrative. Taskmaster, in particular, embodies this characteristic, aligning with the original concept of the Thunderbolts, where villains disguised themselves as heroes.
In the second place, all of them have been augmented soldiers, either through a serum or other methods that turn them into weapons rather than ordinary people. This aspect of their characters seems to be crucial in bringing them together and may also explain the presence of The Sentry, or “Bob,” in the film. However, exactly how it all connects is yet to be revealed. Given Taskmaster’s unique abilities, it is likely that they will be the one to uncover the connection, revealing to everyone else that their assembly is not as complex as it seems. Perhaps in Thunderbolts, Taskmaster might reveal the team and themselves to the world, showing who they truly are.
