After much speculation, Will Smith has unveiled the reason behind his mysterious Matrix references – he’s teamed up with rapper Big Sean for a new music collaboration! On his Instagram page, Smith posted a sneak peek of their upcoming single “Beautiful Scars” video, set to be released on January 30th. The image shows both artists dressed as characters from The Matrix, with Smith embodying Neo (a nod to him declining the role during its development) and Big Sean playing Morpheus, complete with the character’s signature sunglasses and shirt-and-tie attire.
As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: “In the comments beneath Chance the Rapper’s Instagram post, he expressed regret about not being involved in the project. He wrote ‘I coulda been Tank’ twice – once with a bolded and emphatic talking head emoji, the other time accompanied by a sad face emoji. Tank is one of Morpheus’ crew members on the Nebuchadnezzar in the first Matrix movie. You can see Smith’s post right below.
For the past month, Smith has been gradually hinting at a project related to the Matrix. At first, some speculated that he might be part of a new Matrix film, but it turned out that he isn’t connected to Matrix 5, which is currently in production and helmed by Drew Goddard. Recently, however, Smith revealed a series of behind-the-scenes clips and photos suggesting that classic Matrix scenes will be reenacted for a music video. This music video will make its debut at an exclusive premiere event happening in several major U.S. cities’ movie theaters.
Smith’s followers know that before making a name as an actor, he was already recognized for his achievements in the music world. In the ’80s, Smith gained popularity as a hip-hop duo with DJ Jazzy Jeff and later went solo. During his musical journey, Smith has been nominated for eight Grammy awards, winning four. Last year, he showcased a new track, “You Can Make It,” at the BET Awards.
I must admit, the idea of a music video reminiscent of “The Matrix” is truly captivating! The Wachowski sisters’ film remains an iconic visual masterpiece in Hollywood, so this project should embody some cinematic elements. From what Will Smith has shown us behind the scenes, he plans to reimagine at least the dojo fight, the lobby shootout, and Neo evading bullets – sequences that have become legendary in the movie. This project is intriguing, but there’s a risk it might seem like a gimmick. However, I believe Smith has comprehended the significance of this undertaking and taken the appropriate measures to make it something extraordinary. The fact that he’s premiering the music video on the big screen indicates his immense pride in it.
In a fresh take, Big Sean stepping into Morpheus’ role is intriguing, as we anticipate how this will unfold in the song and its accompanying video. As Morpheus was Neo’s guide in understanding his reality, “Beautiful Scars” could explore a similar dynamic, with Big Sean assisting Smith through a challenging phase. The song title hints that Smith might be in a contemplative state, grappling with past regrets and lingering remorse. With Big Sean’s versatility in music and acting, “Beautiful Scars” is expected to deliver an engaging tune and an impactful music video.
