Will Smith Cryptically Teases New Matrix Project

Will Smith may be entering The Matrix.

It seems that’s what the Oscar-winning individual suggested in a cryptic video shared on social media on January 6th, which touched upon his choice to decline the main role in the blockbuster series developed by the Wachowskis (Lana and Lilly).

1997 saw the Wachowskis extend an offer to Will Smith for the role of Neo in “The Matrix”. However, he declined and opted for “Wild Wild West”, considering it a more suitable choice for him then. One can’t help but wonder how “The Matrix” might have differed with Will Smith portraying Neo.

“Wake up, Will…” the video continued. “The Matrix has you…”

However, hold your excitement in check for now, as while Warner Bros. did announce a new Matrix film for release in April 2024, Will Smith, aka the Bad Boys star, isn’t associated with the project at this time, according to Variety’s sources.

We’ve attempted to contact Warner Bros. Pictures and a representative for Will, but we haven’t received a response yet from either party.

In the year 1999, a groundbreaking science fiction action film hit the screens, featuring Keanu Reeves in the lead role of Neo – an ordinary computer programmer destined to be “The One,” who would free humanity from a machine-controlled Matrix. This movie’s popularity led to three subsequent installments: “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (also in 2003), followed by “The Matrix Resurrections” which was released in 2021.

Previously, he had clarified that he declined the position, a role which was also extended to Sandra Bullock, his co-star from the movie “Speed”. He later disclosed that he hadn’t fully grasped the idea presented to him when it was initially discussed.

In a YouTube video from 2019, he stated that following the production of “Men in Black,” the Wachowskis joined the project, having previously made just one film. He went on to explain that while they are indeed brilliant minds, there’s a delicate boundary between genius and what transpired during our pitch meeting.

Regardless of the movie’s triumph, Will chose to justify his decision to decline the role.

Keanu stated emphatically that both he and Lawrence Fishburne were spot-on in their roles. He admitted, “Had I been cast as Morpheus, I might have botched The Matrix. I could have destroyed it. But ultimately, I think I saved you all from seeing a potential disaster!

In the meantime, as we eagerly await updates about the fifth Matrix film, let’s delve into other exciting new movies hitting the big screen soon!
