The second installment of “Solo Leveling” concluded without a set date for the third season, leaving fans eagerly waiting for A-1 Pictures to confirm when Jinwoo will reappear on screen. Fervently hoping that one of the main issues related to the second season will be resolved, we can only cross our fingers and wait. Previously a “world’s worst hunter,” Jinwoo Sung has now arguably ascended to the title of the world’s best, swiftly defeating Beru, Jeju Island’s strongest inhabitant. Regrettably, this “swift defeat” is one of the significant issues that currently characterizes the power-centric anime series.
I’ve been absolutely hooked on the thrilling journey of Jinwoo in “Solo Leveling,” where each step of his evolution into an unstoppable force has been nothing short of exhilarating. From one edge-of-the-seat battle to another, Jinwoo has consistently outshone S-Rank hunters in South Korea, demonstrating that even the strongest human adversaries can’t stand a chance against him.
As we delve into season two, the narrative offers intriguing layers to Jinwoo’s meteoric rise, such as the Hunter Association attempting to capture him and his relentless pursuit for his mother’s cure. However, the arc set on Jeju Island serves as a poignant reminder of when the series occasionally succumbs to its “power scaling problem,” where an overemphasis on character power levels can overshadow the richness of the storytelling.
The Tragedy of Jeju Island
From the outset of Solo Leveling, Jeju Island has been a formidable presence in the backdrop. This island, teeming with ants, was so hazardous that it required the combined efforts of South Korea’s top S-Rank hunters to keep the ants under control. When these hunters assembled with the intention of eradicating the ant infestation once and for all, Beru, the new ant king, emerged and wreaked havoc on humans unlucky enough to be on Jeju. However, when Jinwoo Sung arrived, everything took a dramatic turn.
In the story of Solo Leveling, it was quite predictable that Jinwoo would emerge victorious in his fight against the ant-killer, but what left many anime enthusiasts surprised was how swiftly the battle would end. Beru, a menace foreshadowed for almost two seasons, was defeated by Sung within a single episode. Although it’s enjoyable to witness Sung’s development, the abrupt resolution of this significant story arc could potentially pose challenges in future plot progression.
Solo Leveling Season Three Might Hit Differently
In the final scenes of Season Two in ‘Solo Leveling’, Jinwoo showcased his new phalanx of shadows, which has served him well due to his necromancer abilities. However, the climax of Season Three features Sung surrounded by a multitude of wizards, monstrous bears, soldiers, and even a dragon. Adding to this, Jinwoo’s strength and speed have been amplified. With an army at his disposal, the anime needs to introduce more formidable adversaries to keep up with the heroic protagonist. Moreover, increasing the life-threatening situations for the once weakest hunter in the world would significantly heighten the tension. Unlike many other anime series, ‘Solo Leveling’ could benefit from a protagonist who may ultimately sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Fortunately for fans of “Solo Leveling”, it’s expected that the third season of the anime will present some formidable obstacles for Jinwoo, if it adheres to the source material. The production team at A-1 Pictures must be mindful of extending certain battles to make them all the more impactful. The journey of Sung’s strength development has been captivating, but upcoming challenges that truly test his might will add an extra layer of excitement now that he is almost omnipotent. Although it may take some time for “Solo Leveling” season three to premiere, given the global popularity of the series, it seems likely that we’ll once again be drawn into the hunter-centric world on the big screen.
