As a long-time devotee of the silver screen and someone who has witnessed the evolution of cinema since the days of black and white films, I must say that the recent success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is nothing short of extraordinary. Tim Burton’s latest offering has proven, yet again, his unique ability to blend humor, horror, and heart in a way that resonates with audiences across generations.
Without a doubt, it’s clear that the return of Beetlejuice is nothing short of a blockbuster triumph! The freshly unveiled Tim Burton sequel has certainly made waves at cinemas during its debut weekend, demonstrating that even after 36 years since the original, there remains an insatiable craving for Michael Keaton’s boundlessly chaotic bio-exorcist.
In this fresh movie sequel, Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara reprise their memorable characters from the first installment. Additionally, an array of well-known actors join the cast – among them Jenna Ortega. While it offers a fun watch, the plot can feel somewhat crowded and complex.
And although critical reactions were relatively middling – we gave it 3 stars in our own review – it’s clearly going down a storm with cinemagoers.
Indeed, with this level of success, it’s natural to wonder: is another movie in store? Here’s what we’ve learned so far…
Will there be a Beetlejuice 3?
At present, it remains uncertain as we haven’t received any indications that another movie is being planned – so far, there’s no evidence for it.
In an interview with Variety, Burton playfully dismissed the idea of another sequel by humorously calculating, “Given that it took 35 years to produce this one, I’d be well over a century old when we consider another.
He added: “I guess it’s possible with the advent of science these days, but I don’t think so.”
In other words, while it’s not the best indication, it doesn’t definitively disprove the possibility either. Interestingly, during a different conversation, producer Tommy Harper hinted that there might be some hope for it to occur, although they haven’t explicitly talked about it as of yet.
He shared with Total Film that they hadn’t discussed potential future developments, but rather focused on creating an exceptional film. “Give it your all,” he advised, “and from there, unforeseen possibilities might arise.
Anything could happen, eh? So there’s definitely a chance…
Absolutely, it’s worth noting that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been a box office sensation. Not only did it boast the third largest opening of the year, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, but it also grossed more than almost any other film released in September, with 2017’s It being the sole exception in earning more.
Based on these findings, it’s likely that studio executives will make every effort to persuade Tim Burton to revisit the world of the afterlife once again.
Previously, it had been quite some time since a highly anticipated follow-up to a movie from 36 years prior created a stir at the box office, and that was Top Gun: Maverick, produced by Harper. Another sequel in that series is currently being developed – so who knows?
Of course, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice concludes in a way that hints at a possible sequel. Lydia Deetz, portrayed by Winona Ryder, continues to be troubled by the ghostly antagonist. Who knows if he won’t be called upon again to cause chaos?
We’ll make sure to refresh this page whenever we get new information regarding a potential third installment of Beetlejuice, which might very well end up being named Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is out now in UK cinemas.
