Lately, Reese Witherspoon has made it clear that she and Nicole Kidman have been keeping watch for updates on Moriarty’s next novel, implying that things might start rolling again regarding a possible third season of the popular HBO show.

As of now, HBO have not officially renewed Big Little Lies for season 3.
However, it doesn’t mean that all the pieces of the puzzle aren’t working tirelessly to come together. More recently, Nicole Kidman’s comments pre-emptively revealed that season 3 “is in good shape”, later admitting: “I got excited.”
Following a statement made by Kidman to Variety in January 2024 about her daily texting with Reese Witherspoon concerning Season 3 of Big Little Lies, she later disclosed in June 2024 through Vanity Fair that things were progressing swiftly and vigorously. Liane [Moriarty] was delivering the book, and they were in a favorable position.
Nicole and I have been eagerly awaiting, as confirmed by a chat with E! News. However, our eagerness stems from anticipation for Lianne Moriarty’s upcoming work. Once she submits it, we plan on returning to the original author and revisiting the original characters.
From where I stand, what I can express is simply that I’m working on the book. It appears to me that everyone seems quite eager for it, which gives me a strong sense that it might indeed come to fruition.
She continued: “The viewers want it, the cast all love working together so much, and I’m writing a book – I feel like we’ve got everything in place to make it happen.
However, I wouldn’t want David E. Kelley to transform my book once more, as he is the one with the enchanting abilities.
Big Little Lies season 3 release date speculation
Since there’s no official confirmation about a third season for Big Little Lies yet, we don’t know exactly when another episode might air on our television sets.
The filming for season two commenced in March 2018 with an intended release date in June 2019. Essentially, this means coordinating the calendars of showrunner David E Kelley, author Liane Moriarty, and the principal actors who are all key figures in the production.
Previously, Kelly mentioned to TVLine in 2021 that it might be difficult to coordinate due to everyone’s schedules being packed: “I don’t think it could be arranged immediately.
Casey Bloys, the head of HBO and Max content, mentioned during a conversation with Variety last January that coordinating schedules among numerous stars and writing the scripts is essential for successful production.
“We have a lot of work ahead, as things are just getting started. At the moment, everyone in our cast is busy with their own projects in shows and movies. However, this group is truly special, and they really enjoy collaborating. Once they settle on an idea, I’m confident they will bring it to fruition. We can’t wait for them to be ready, and we’ll move forward when they are.

However, it was Meryl Streep’s masterful portrayal of a relentless mother, determined to expose the truth behind her son’s murder, that truly expanded the narrative horizon in the subsequent season. The second season delved deep into the aftermath of that fateful moment, skillfully crafted by Moriarty as he penned the treatment for this captivating phase.
As I reflect on the gripping conclusion of season two, it’s impossible to ignore the heart-stopping suspense left hanging in the air: Will the Monterey Five ultimately decide to spill their secrets at the police station? The anticipation is palpable.
Since then, we’ve been waiting in suspense, but Moriarty has announced that she’s writing a follow-up novel to her first book. She’s open to the TV show adapting it as they prefer.
In my own words, I’d like to borrow a sentiment from an author whose name escapes me at the moment, as he shared in an interview that he didn’t view his books as mere stepping stones leading towards film adaptations.
For a devoted film enthusiast like myself, the original novel remains the ultimate destination. Yet, I must admit, I’m equally enthused and anticipating that this remarkable adaptation seems imminent.
From what Moriarty shared, it’s reasonable to expect a time leap in the sequel novel since there’s a significant gap between when she wrote Big Little Lies and now, given that her real-life children have grown older. If season three were to happen, it might follow this pattern as well.
In my new story, the characters have grown up and are now teenagers themselves, which means that the original females from the first story are now their parents.
Moriarty mentioned that her upcoming novel is not focused on a specific individual, explaining: “At this point, I can’t reveal too much, but what I can tell you is that the characters are parents of teenagers. All the main female characters are present and accounted for.
