As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the anticipation for Days Gone 2 is palpable among the gaming community. The original game, with its stunning open-world setting and thrilling survival mechanics, left us yearning for more.
Recently, not many games have sparked as much debate as Days Gone. While some players have thoroughly enjoyed its zombie-themed journey, critical reception has been more reserved. This situation leaves us wondering if we might see a sequel to Days Gone in the future.
Despite love from fans, and selling over 8 million copies, a sequel has always been in doubt.
Despite the fact that there hasn’t been recent updates, it’s evident that Sony (PlayStation) acknowledges the strong fan affection for the game, as they have announced a movie adaptation in production.
Following a recent comment from the game’s creator, speculation surrounding a possible sequel has intensified, so let’s delve into what we currently understand about Days Gone 2.
Will there be a Days Gone 2?
According to the first game’s director, Days Gone will never see a sequel.
In a recent tweet pointing towards the mentioned poster, the game’s director, Jeff Ross, expressed that due to numerous inquiries about a Days Gone sequel, he is providing the poster as proof that such a follow-up will not materialize.
The poster showcases several classic characters from PlayStation’s history, such as Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Cole MacGrath from the initial Infamous games – all of whom have been absent for quite some time.
Absent from view is the character of Deacon St John, who could be seen as a common protagonist in Days Gone. This omission might explain why Ross thinks the series has come to an end.
In stark contrast to his statements made in 2021, he was more ambiguous then about the possibility of a sequel, keeping some fans optimistic.
I should mention that back in 2020, Ross, the mastermind behind Days Gone’s development at Bend Studio, moved on to work at both NetherRealm Studios and Crystal Dynamics. Consequently, if a new project were to emerge, it’s possible he might not be privy to the details due to his current commitments.
According to reports by Bloomberg on April 9th, 2021, highly-connected games journalist Jason Schreier stated that Sony Bend, renowned for the 2019 open-world action game Days Gone, made an attempt to propose a sequel in the same year, though their efforts were unsuccessful based on sources familiar with the proposal.
Despite the initial game proving profitable for me, its creation process was prolonged significantly and the response from critics was split, making a sequel like Days Gone 2 seem uncertain or not worth pursuing at this time.
Later on April 11th, things became more intriguing. The director of Days Gone, Jeff Ross, appeared in a lengthy video on David Jaffe’s YouTube channel (director of the original God of War). Although Ross is no longer with Sony Bend and now works at NetherRealm Studios, it’s safe to say he has insight into the future of the Days Gone series.
During a comprehensive discussion in response to Schreier’s Bloomberg report, Ross communicated to Jaffe: “I won’t verify whether Days Gone 2 is underway. I believe it’s not yet clear to the public. I prefer not to express my view on this matter. In my opinion, its status has not been officially confirmed to the public.
Ross then shared that the strategy for Sony at this stage was… When a game such as Days Gone initially started, they had only 45 team members. They were wandering around wondering how they could create an open-world game with just 45 people. The solution was, they expanded. They altered their number from 45 to approximately 120.
Expanding the company as such led to Days Gone becoming pricier than initially anticipated. To phrase it in Ross’ words, “There was an initial budget for Days Gone, which was substantial, but it didn’t remain the same. The final figure was significantly greater, and I believe that figure now serves as the starting point for the next project.
A larger budget for a project brings about greater demands, as Ross puts it, “When you need to sell four out of every five million units just to cover costs, there’s an underlying belief in the profitability. Sony doesn’t have the financial resources that Microsoft does, so they must use their funds wisely and maintain a balanced portfolio.
He added, later in the conversation: “I just don’t want to comment on the status of [Days Gone 2], because Sony hasn’t officially announced it.”
As a devoted fan, I must admit that, given the current circumstances, it seems highly improbable we’ll see a sequel anytime soon. However, with the enigmatic nature of Bend Studio’s ongoing projects, and the indomitable spirit Days Gone has instilled in us, who knows? Perhaps even death isn’t as final as we think.
What would happen in Days Gone 2?
In addition, during an interview with David Jaffe, Jeff Ross, director of Days Gone, shared that his team at Sony Bend originally planned to include cooperative gameplay in the initial Days Gone game. This concept wasn’t implemented in the first game, but according to Ross, it might be a feature in Days Gone 2.
Collaborating with a buddy to combat hordes of undead foes, potentially featuring a base-building element as well, is the kind of gameplay experience you might encounter in Days Gone 2 (should it ever come to fruition). Given the collapse of Concord, it seems doubtful that this would be incorporated into a future installment. However, you never know!
Based on how the first game concluded, we can make educated assumptions about the plot of Days Gone 2. With James O’Brian from NERO being unveiled as a cunning variant of the ‘Freaker’, he appears to be a strong candidate for the main antagonist in Days Gone 2.
As a die-hard fan of cinema, I’m eagerly hoping that one day, I might step back into the leather boots of Deacon St John, played by Sam Witwer. If such an opportunity arises, perhaps we can finally vanquish O’Brian and NERO for good, bringing a more fulfilling ending to the story this time.
Sign the Days Gone 2 petition
Should you persist in your hopes, here’s some encouraging news: Enthusiasts have initiated a petition on Change.org, aiming to persuade Sony PlayStation to endorse Days Gone 2.
If you’re interested in a sequel, please sign below, but keep in mind that the success of the petition is still uncertain – however, it definitely shows Sony how much value the game holds for its fans.
As I type this, the petition counts a total of approximately 229,905 signatures. It’s heartening to witness such passionate fan support. We’ll keep you updated if any new information about Days Gone 2 surfaces.
