Will there be a Kraven the Hunter 2?

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has weathered countless cinematic storms, I must say that my heart sinks when yet another promising superhero flick fails to deliver. The Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has been on a downward spiral for quite some time now, and the latest addition to their roster, Kraven the Hunter, unfortunately joins the list of underwhelming films that have left audiences and critics alike scratching their heads.

Prior to the long-awaited debut of Kraven the Hunter, many had doubts whether it could improve the less-than-favorable standing of the Sony Spider-Man Universe as a series of underperforming films, particularly in terms of critical acclaim.

Well, it turns out just as I anticipated after the controversial debuts of Madame Web and Venom: The Last Dance earlier in 2024. Following closely behind, Kraven’s release has also faced a storm of unfavorable criticisms. As a fan, I wasn’t surprised to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of the main antagonist receive largely negative reviews.

In our review, we stated that the film’s script seemed heavy and missed the spark of witty dialogue. We also found it disappointingly lackluster or unimpressive.

In simpler terms, let’s delve into what these developments imply for Kraven’s future and subsequent movies within the Spider-Man Universe. Here’s a breakdown of key points.

Will there be a Kraven the Hunter 2?

Sorry Kraven fans – it’s not looking good at the moment.

It appears that while director JC Chandor expressed interest in adapting the comic book story ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’, current plans for the Sony Spider-Man Universe might be delayed or even abandoned altogether.

Despite some reservations, star Taylor-Johnson maintained an optimistic outlook when discussing the film’s future during a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. In essence, he stated that this initial movie is intended for everyone, and by the end of it, viewers will likely be eager to see more.

He added: “It’s up to you guys, it’s all over to you now.”

Simultaneously, one of the film’s secondary actors, Academy Award-winning Ariana DeBose, proposed another intriguing idea for the character’s future: expanding the role into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

She shared with Variety that this film is intended to serve as a standalone piece and an origin story for Kraven, while also hinting at a future epic battle between him and Spider-Man. With so many comics dedicated to their showdown, she feels the audience deserves it. She suggests exploring this concept, and if there’s room in the narrative for both Kraven’s and Calypso’s journeys, that would be fantastic!

Although there’s been a lot of positivity from those involved, it seems the situation isn’t as bright as they suggest. A recent article in The Wrap indicates that Sony, due to a string of unsuccessful films, is considering abandoning its entire Spider-Man Universe franchise.

While it’s not definitive at this point, considering the response to the majority of these films, it might not be unexpected news if there were talks about a Kraven 2. Stay tuned for any fresh updates as we follow the ongoing developments.
