Will There Be a Sequel to Krampus?

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for all things horror and a particular fondness for indie films that defy expectations, I must say I am eagerly awaiting the return of Michael Dougherty’s holiday-themed terrors. While the icy grasp of Krampus seems to have loosened its hold on a sequel, the prospect of more Trick ‘r Treat tales is far from frozen solid.

Movie director Michael Dougherty is known for creating two popular horror-comedy films that revolve around holidays, and fans have been eagerly anticipating sequels for quite some time. After releasing his 2007 Halloween anthology “Trick ‘r Treat,” Dougherty decided to focus on Christmas with the chilling story of “Krampus.” The film follows Max Engel (played by Emjay Anthony) and his family as they encounter a fearsome monster from European folklore, Krampus, who has been summoned to punish Max for losing the joy of Christmas. His town is now overrun with Krampus’s menacing minions.

Despite Krampus having been released over a decade ago, director Dougherty has hinted at the potential for a sequel for dedicated fans. During a Q&A with Collider in October 2023, the filmmaker shared that an idea for Krampus 2 was under consideration.

According to Dougherty, the story isn’t strictly focused on a family, but rather revolves around a collection of individuals who find themselves in a predicament and are stuck in one place.

In the final scene of the movie Krampus, it appears that the story of the Engel family comes to an end, with each member being captured by Krampus and his sinister henchmen and sent to the underworld. The film’s ending shows them confined within a snow globe as part of Krampus’ extensive hoard of people trapped inside snow globes, held captive in his lair.

Although fans eagerly anticipate further escapades with Krampus and his companions, it seems that a sequel might not materialize soon. The mere mention of director Dougherty having a plan is intriguing, but there’s no definite word yet on whether Krampus 2 will come to fruition.

Is a Trick ‘r Treat Sequel Likely to Happen Sooner?

It’s been more than 15 years that the horror anthology has made its home during Halloween, and fans of Dougherty’s holiday frights can look forward to a sequel for “Trick ‘r Treat” coming up much quicker compared to a continuation of “Krampus.” This is because a script for the former has already been drafted. Moreover, the filmmaker has recently encouraged fans not to lose hope for additional “Trick ‘r Treat” tales.

Dougherty expressed on the film’s 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray commentary that he is eager to proceed with the project, but it’s not ready yet. There’s definite progress, but he won’t rush or compromise for a sequel. He wants it to happen under ideal circumstances with sufficient resources. If not, he’s fine with the movie standing as this unique production that overcame numerous obstacles.

He added, “But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.”

Additionally, Dougherty shared insights on the difficulties of making independent horror movies and expressed opinions regarding the format of the sequel.

The filmmaker expressed that the project was challenging due to a sense that they had successfully encapsulated a flash of brilliance, which proved taxing. Interestingly, many beloved horror films, particularly those introducing new horror icons, were independently produced. These don’t typically align with the standard metrics that studios use for an easy approval. In making the sequel, I was firm about maintaining its unconventional narrative structure and preserving the unique blend of horror and humor.
