As someone who has been following this story since its inception, I have to say that I am intrigued by the possibility of more episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. While I understand the controversy surrounding the portrayal of real-life events, I must admit that Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch did an outstanding job in their roles as the brothers.
This series, which has sparked much debate, remains a hit on Netflix, leaving viewers divided in their opinions. Since its debut a month ago, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has not only taken the lead on Netflix’s rankings, but it has also brought increased attention to the show’s cast and the real-life crime tale itself.
This nine-episode series reenacts the murder case of José and Kitty Menendez by their sons, Lyle and Erik, which took place in 1989. The drama delves into – using a fictionalized perspective – the events that unfolded before and after the murders, ultimately leading to the much-discussed trial and subsequent conviction of the brothers.
However, since its debut, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story has faced criticism not only from critics but also directly from Erik Menendez himself, as he has spoken out against creator Ryan Murphy’s depiction of the brothers.
The imminent release of a Netflix documentary involving the Menendez brothers’ participation has sparked renewed interest in the case, and it’s worth mentioning that a new court hearing for them is scheduled for November.
It seems Murphy suggests that since the actual events are still unfolding, it’s possible we might see additional installments of the Monsters series, potentially including more episodes about The Lyle and Erik Menendez story. Is there a chance we will get further instalments of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story?
Will there more episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story?
At present, it remains uncertain whether there will be additional episodes for the series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
Ryan Murphy, the show’s creator, hasn’t ruled out the idea completely. In fact, he’s shown an inclination towards producing a few more “episodes, one or two” if the opportunity arises.
When asked by Variety, Murphy expressed his desire for further exploration of the story. He suggested this could be achieved, provided Nicholas [Alexander Chavez] and Cooper [Koch] are amenable, through perhaps a couple of episodes that continue the narrative.
Indeed, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch portray Lyle and Erik Menendez respectively within the TV series. This observation is made by Murphy, who speaks after Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón has requested a fresh trial for the Menendez brothers due to recently discovered evidence and heightened interest in the case following the popularity of the Netflix production.
At a press conference in October, as reported by Variety, Gascón revealed that they’ve received evidence, which includes a photocopied letter, supposedly written by one of the brothers to a relative, discussing being a victim of molestation.
Additionally, we have received testimony from the defense’s legal team claiming that a member of Menudo asserted that he had been sexually abused by his father.
The final result of the November hearing regarding Erik and Lyle is still undecided, so we don’t know if it will lead to a new trial or a re-sentencing for them. This point remains unconfirmed.
At this moment, we can’t yet confirm if we accept or reject the presented information, but our duty is to carefully examine it from a fair perspective. If a potential resentencing is involved, we must decide if the individuals, despite being murderers, have served enough time and fulfilled their societal debt, even though they might deserve more time.
In case there were pieces of evidence unavailable during the trial, if those evidences had been shown, it’s possible that the jury might have reached a different verdict.
Currently, it’s confirmed that the Monsters anthology series is set to return for a third season, with a focus on serial killer Ed Gein, portrayed by Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy. However, whether there will be additional episodes about the Menendez brothers depends on if the cast decides to rejoin and if the new episodes offer opportunities for continued in-depth storytelling.
What could further episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story be about?
According to Murphy, if the show proceeds, the fresh installments of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” are expected to carry on the narrative of the Menendez brothers. However, whether it will follow their story up until the current day is uncertain at this point.
Given that Murphy wants Chavez and Koch to play the brothers again, it’s likely that the show will pick up with the brothers’ storyline not long after their prison separation, a significant event from the end of episode 9.
If the show doesn’t choose to depict the aging of Chavez and Koch, it may continue with episodes focusing on their individual prison ordeals, including multiple appeals throughout the years. During their imprisonment, both brothers found time to get married, initiate the Green Space Project, and were finally reunited in 2018.
Previously, Murphy mentioned that his focus wasn’t specifically on the Menendez brothers themselves, but rather the accusations they made about sexual abuse. Therefore, it’s likely that the upcoming episodes will continue to explore the alleged instances of abuse that the brothers claim was inflicted upon them by their father, José.
In a chat with Variety, Murphy expressed that it’s both risky and thrilling to deal with topics that are trending.
Previously mentioned, my fascination has never lied with the Menendez brothers themselves, but rather the aspect of sexual abuse. This was what truly captivated me. It’s intriguing to see that others share this sentiment and believe that such evidence should have been allowed in their second trial. The fact that it resonates with so many people is absolutely fascinating.
Both main actors openly expressed support for the real-life brothers, declaring that they “stand alongside” them. In fact, Koch personally encountered the siblings in San Diego just a month after the Netflix series’ premiere.
In other words, it’s uncertain if the actual brothers’ backing and interaction will influence their future acting roles; we’ll find out as events unfold.
