Will Trent Season 4 to Introduce Major Book Character & Love Interest

Warning: SPOILERS for the end of Karin Slaughter’s Grant County book series.

In the final stages of Will Trent’s romantic journey at the end of season 3, things might appear dull, but there are promising signs for a fresh romantic entanglement from the novels. The cast of Will Trent in season 3 has faced numerous hardships; Ormewood is battling brain cancer, Angie miraculously kept her baby despite being kicked repeatedly after her mother’s death, and Will continues to grapple with the guilt of shooting a child dead. However, as these troubles are resolved in season 4, a new character could potentially join the storyline.

After the hospital outbreak during the final episode of Will Trent‘s third season, it’s likely that many locals will be seeking explanations regarding what transpired with them and their kin. Given the recent medical crises, introducing a new character with medical expertise could provide valuable insights into preventing future attacks, assuming the GBI is open to external perspectives. Additionally, there may be another plot detail from the season 3 finale that supports the introduction of this specific book character.

Angie And Will Likely Won’t Get Back Together After Will Trent Season 3

She’s Been Efficiently Anchored To Somebody Else

One of the major mysteries left unresolved in season 3 of “Will Trent” is whether Gina Rodriguez will reprise her role as Marion following her mid-season departure. Since her character’s professional connection to the GBI was severed when she ended a relationship with one of its members, it might seem that her exit would clear the way for Will and Angie to reunite. However, given that Angie is now carrying a child for a man she deeply cares about, it seems improbable that she would get back together with Will at this juncture, as such a development wouldn’t align with the current storyline.

It’s open to interpretation whether their “will they/won’t they” relationship could sustain itself further in the series, given that Angie eventually ends things with Will permanently in the source novels. While the show deviates significantly from the books, this may not have been an immediate issue due to the differences. However, as the story progressed, it became evident that the actors shared a stronger friendship dynamic on screen rather than romantic chemistry, thereby creating room for a new character from the books to make an unexpected appearance.

Will Trent Had A Bigger Romantic Interest In The Original Books

His Relationship With Angie Ends Permanently

Following their separation in the novels, Sara Linton, a character introduced in Slaughter’s Will Trent book series, is established as a woman who eventually forms a relationship with Will after dealing with the loss of her husband within the series that originally introduced her. This series concludes approximately a year before the Will Trent series begins, and for the rest of the books, Sara becomes Will’s main romantic interest.

Fans of the book series were overjoyed when Will finally ended things with Angie for good, a twist that viewers of the show might not have predicted. From the start, Angie in Slaughter’s Triptych seems rather disrespectful. As her character develops, it becomes clear that she is often less dismissive than downright rude to her coworkers, and Will often bears the brunt of this behavior. Despite improvements in her portrayal on the show, many fans who have read the Will Trent books are excitedly awaiting the introduction of a new character to take over her role.

How Will Trent Season 4 Could Introduce Sara Linton

There May Be Behind-The-Scenes Issues With Bringing Her In

Given the significant differences between the series and the books, it’s challenging to envision how Sara would fit seamlessly into Will Trent’s main cast. Nevertheless, her entry in the novels suggests that introducing Sara in Will Trent Season 4 could be effortless without disrupting the primary narrative. Their encounter occurs in the book following Sara’s husband’s tragic death due to an explosive mailbox. However, given Sara’s role as a medical expert, the viral threat in Season 3 offers another opportunity for her character introduction.

Nico barely escaped the virus’s impact, and Will plans to ensure they have subsequent check-ups. The situation with Sara is unclear – she might have lost her spouse or was never married in the first place. However, it seems fitting for Will Trent to present Sara as one of the medical professionals handling the hospital’s post-attack recovery. Whether ABC owns the rights to Slaughter’s Grant County novels doesn’t change this, but either way, it’s high time that Will encounters his long-deserved romantic interest.
