Willem Dafoe Teases Green Goblin MCU Return in Spider-Man 4: “I Could Come Back”

As a cinema devotee with a soft spot for Marvel’s Spider-Man saga, I find myself eagerly anticipating the upcoming “Spider-Man 4.” The return of Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, is a delightful twist that harks back to my childhood memories of Sam Raimi’s trilogy.

Wishing a swift journey, Spider-Man. Actor Willem Dafoe, who portrayed arch-enemy Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, hints at lingering conflicts with the web-slinger. Although Dafoe’s Green Goblin perished in a glider fight against Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in 2002’s Spider-Man, Osborn reappeared as a hallucination in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2007’s Spider-Man 3. He was then drawn from the multiverse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to haunt yet another Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

Despite Spider-Man in Holland’s version apparently healing Osborn, who was later transported back to his original universe by Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), DeFoe hinted at a possible comeback of his character in the forthcoming “Spider-Man 4” within the MCU.

He hinted on Entertainment Tonight that he might return, as he found working with Tom in the Spider-Man series enjoyable and fun.

Details about the plot are being kept secret, but it has been disclosed that the fourth Spider-Man movie featuring Tom Holland will focus on the consequences of No Way Home: a scenario where the world forgets about Peter Parker’s existence.

In Pascal’s words on Deadline’s Behind the Lens, he acknowledged that the film centers around the fact that he chose to abandon his identity as Peter Parker and instead dedicate himself fully to being Spider-Man because maintaining the former was proving too challenging.

Pascal’s remarks suggest a storyline similar to “All-Day, Everyday Spider-Man,” where Peter Parker chose to be Spider-Man round-the-clock due to two major villains gaining power in the Marvel Universe: Norman Osborn transformed into the Iron Patriot and led the Dark Avengers under H.A.M.M.E.R., a more aggressive version of S.H.I.E.L.D., while J. Jonah Jameson was elected New York’s mayor, swiftly establishing an Anti-Spider Squad to pursue the vigilante Spider-Man.

The story also dealt with the ramifications of Spider-Man magically restoring his secret identity after the events of Civil War.

Destin Daniel Cretton, known for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Wonder Man,” will direct a film written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. These writers are famous for their work on the Spider-Man trilogy directed by Jon Watts, which was co-produced by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. The production team includes Pascal and Kevin Feige from Marvel. Tom Holland has confirmed that filming will start in summer 2025, with a planned release date of July 2026.

In a recent interview on Good Morning America, Holland expressed that we’re nearly ready with a creative piece that he believes will truly resonate with our audience. He added that we’re now certain the concept is robust enough to proceed, and the shooting will take place next summer. He described the story as extraordinary and slightly distinct from our previous works, hinting that fans are going to find it quite intriguing.

Following Robert Eggers’ movie “Nosferatu”, where Dafoe plays Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz opposite Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Dafoe has several upcoming projects: Abel Ferrara’s “American Nails”, “Late Fame”, and A24’s “The Legend of Ochi. In the meantime, the unnamed “Spider-Man 4” has been scheduled by Sony for a release on July 26, 2026.
