Win or Lose Trailer: Pixar Takes on Sports in Studio’s First Original TV Series

The upcoming Pixar animated series titled “Win or Lose” is set to debut on Disney+, following the success of their previous spinoff series, “Dream Productions,” which delved into the mind of a hockey player dealing with anxiety, Riley Andersen, in the show “Inside Out”. This new series takes a fresh look at another sport: baseball. As Pixar’s inaugural original series and its first sports-themed production, “Win or Lose” revolves around the Pickles, an underdog softball team gearing up for a major championship game. Check out the just-released trailer to get acquainted with these new characters below.

From eight distinct characters’ viewpoints, the story Win or Lose offers an insight into their experiences – from the self-doubting children to their overprotective parents, and even a heartbroken umpire – all portrayed with humor, strong emotions, and uniquely designed animations, as suggested by the summary.

According to Pete Docter, the chief creative officer at Pixar and director of popular films like “Monsters, Inc.”, “Up”, “Inside Out”, and “Soul”, the upcoming tentpole series titled “Win or Lose” is a groundbreaking, pioneering project. He stated this in a statement, emphasizing that it highlights what he believes makes Pixar exceptional: daring, innovative storytelling, side-splitting humor, and characters that resonate with everyone.

The series consists of eight episodes, helmed by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, esteemed members of the Pixar senior creative team who have worked on upcoming projects like “Turning Red” (2022), “Lightyear” (2022), “Inside Out 2” (2024), and “Dream Productions”. David Lally, a veteran at Pixar with experience in the “SparkShorts” short film series, is serving as the producer for this project.

In a nutshell, “Win or Lose” isn’t primarily focused on softball but rather explores themes of love, competition, and the hurdles we encounter in our pursuit of success – life victories if you will – as explained by Docter during the unveiling of the series at Disney+ Day 2020.

In the recently released trailer for the movie “Win or Lose”, it’s stated that everyone seeks the thrill of victory. However, if one person emerges victorious, then inevitably someone else must come up short.

In the animated series “The Great North,” Will Forte lends his voice to the character Pickles Coach Dan, joined by a star-studded cast that includes Lil Rel Howery, Melissa Villaseñor, Flula Borg, Jaylin Fletcher, Ian Chen, Rosie Foss, Kyliegh Curran, Josh Thomson, Jo Firestone, Milan Elizabeth Ray, Izaac Wang, Chanel Stewart, Erin Keif, Orion Tran, Rosa Salazar, and Rhea Seehorn.

As a filmmaker with a rich history of softball play in my past, I wholeheartedly believe that this timeless game provided the ideal setting for our production. The intricate nuances of sports participation never cease to fascinate me – it’s a unique platform where individuals can reveal their deepest strengths and weaknesses, even the most composed among us may find themselves on the brink of anger.

Winning or losing in this game might seem insignificant at first glance, but the emotional stakes are immeasurably high. Softball proved to be the optimal stage for our favorite themes to unfold, offering a captivating backdrop that we couldn’t resist using.

Yates explained, “Carrie and I shared an office during the production of Toy Story 4. As story artists, we were both involved in the film. We’d often discuss various aspects of the movie as well as current events happening around us. Our reactions to these events or meetings would sometimes differ significantly. One might think, ‘That went marvelously!’ while the other would counter with, ‘Oh no! It was awful, what are you talking about?’ This led us to understand that our unique perspectives, shaped by our personal experiences, can greatly influence how we perceive an event. We aimed to create a narrative that captured this idea.

All eight episodes of Pixar’s Win or Lose are streaming Feb. 19 on Disney+.
