Microsoft has announced an upcoming addition to Windows 11 called “Cross Device Resume,” enabling app developers to seamlessly integrate this functionality into their applications. This new feature mirrors Apple’s existing “Handoff” option on Mac and iPhone, which facilitates the synchronization of apps across devices, making it effortless to pick up right where you left off.
The characteristic was presented during a Build 2025 seminar called “Designing Smooth Cross-Device Interactions with Windows for your app,” however, the presentation has since been revised to remove a demonstration highlighting Cross Device Resume. @phantomofearth managed to catch the session before it was amended.
In a previously removed demonstration, Microsoft highlighted how Spotify could utilize Cross Device Resume, a feature where playback continues seamlessly across devices. This presentation began with a Spotify app running on an Android device that was playing a tune.
On a Windows system, you’ll find the Spotify application pinned to the Taskbar, accompanied by an icon resembling a mobile device. When you hover over this icon, it indicates that the Spotify app is active on your smartphone. Clicking the icon launches the Spotify app on your computer and synchronizes your location within the app on both devices.
Regardless of where you left off, the smooth transition allows you to pick up the same song right where you last paused it, providing a seamless and uninterrupted playback experience as you switch between devices, such as when moving from your mobile device to your PC.
In this case, Spotify served as the demonstration example, but it appears that WhatsApp will also utilize Cross Device Resume. This feature will allow third-party developers to incorporate it into their applications. Microsoft explains that this integration offers an additional method for users to find and explore your app on Windows.
Back in 2027, Microsoft introduced a similar concept to Handoff with Project Rome, a developer tool allowing seamless syncing of app data between Windows computers and mobile devices. The recently unveiled Cross Device Resume appears to be an evolution or follow-up to Project Rome.
