In simpler terms, a function that most contemporary operating systems already offer is soon to be available for Windows 11. This feature, which allows you to see your computer’s battery level alongside the battery icon in the system tray on the taskbar, has been noticed in the latest preview build of Windows 11 by Microsoft.
Most operating systems available today provide an option for displaying the battery percentage on-screen, with the exception of Windows. This feature can be activated in macOS, iPadOS, iOS, and the majority of Android devices. However, the only contemporary system that lacks this functionality at present is Windows. It’s encouraging to see Microsoft addressing this issue now.
Having the battery percentage displayed directly on the Taskbar is convenient as it allows for quick determination of remaining battery life without requiring guesswork based on the sometimes ambiguous icon in the Taskbar. This feature has always allowed you to view the battery percentage by hovering over the battery icon, so this option simply eliminates that additional step.
At the moment, the new battery percentage option is concealed within the most recent Windows 11 Dev Channel build. This feature was initially spotted by the keen-eyed Windows expert @phantomofearth on X, and they’ve also shared guidance on how to activate it if you’re using this build. To unlock the hidden feature, you’ll require a third-party utility called ViveTool.
To activate this feature, try running the command ‘vivetool /enable /id:48822452’. If that doesn’t work for you, use ‘vivetool /enable /id:48433719’ instead. This will not only enable this option but also some other changes to the battery icon that were previously available in certain updates. In the most recent pre-release version, this feature has been concealed but will eventually be activated for testing by Insiders. Meanwhile, the company is also making adjustments to the battery icon on the Taskbar, such as changing its color to orange when the battery saver mode is activated.
It’s pleasing to notice that Microsoft is giving attention to minor but significant quality-of-life improvements in Windows 11, which definitely enhances the whole user experience, making it seem more refined.
