Previously playfully mocked earlier in the year, Arch Linux has now become accessible for download and installation within Microsoft’s WSL on Windows 11 (through It’s FOSS).
A fortnight has passed since another prominent figure was added to the WSL roster, mirroring the release of Fedora 42 as well.
The project was initiated following talks with Microsoft, who showed keenness for a complete, official distribution of Arch Linux within the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).
For Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), an independent GitLab repository is utilized to develop Arch Linux, ensuring it remains distinct from the primary distribution. The images are produced on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, WSL version 1 users are not eligible to participate in this setup.
Arch Linux is built only for WSL 2.
Setting up the software is remarkably straightforward. To initiate its operation on your device, just launch PowerShell and type in the following command:
To make this software functional on your machine, all you need to do is fire up PowerShell and input the subsequent command:
wsl --install archlinux
Once the quick installation process is complete, you’re all set! For those using Windows Terminal, just reboot the application, and you’ll find Arch Linux added to your drop-down list.
If you’re not, or want to enter it from PowerShell directly simply type:
wsl --d archlinux
Apart from confirming that it functions smoothly and rather swiftly, there isn’t much more I can add about it. To clarify, I’m not one who casually mentions operating system preferences (Fedora is my preferred Linux OS now). It’s also important to note that I’m still a novice when it comes to navigating its features.
However, should you choose to proceed, and if you’ve been eagerly anticipating it for your Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) journeys, then by all means, indulge in as much Arch Linux as your heart desires!
