Initially, there was a plan underway to create a television show based on the beloved children’s fantasy series “Wings of Fire“. However, unfortunately, this project faced difficulties during its development stage, often referred to as “development hell”. Now, another streaming platform has stepped in with hopes of reviving the adaptation. Recently, there’s been an exciting piece of news regarding its progress.
According to recent reports, it’s been disclosed that a live-action adaptation of the popular book series Wings of Fire is now under development at Amazon Prime Video. Previously speculated to be in production in 2024, we now know that Aaron Waltke has been confirmed as the series showrunner, co-writer, and executive producer. The original author of Wings of Fire, Tui T. Sutherland, will collaborate with Waltke on the series and also serve as an executive producer, alongside Marc Resteghini from Jack Tar Productions.
Earlier, Waltke had been involved in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia’, a project that earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for his writing in 2018. In addition to this role, he served as the showrunner for the spinoff titled ‘Wizards: Tales of Arcadia’, which subsequently bagged another Daytime Emmy for Best Animated Series in 2019. This series also received the Kidscreen Award for the best new series. Subsequently, Waltke worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the animated ‘Star Trek’ series.
Wings of Fire Is Moving Forward at Prime Video
The television version, as described, “recounts the stories of seven long-feuding tribes who have fought over a centuries-old, vanished treasure. A clandestine group known as the Talons of Peace aim to put an end to this conflict, utilizing a prophecy – a premonition suggesting immense sacrifice. Five dragon hatchlings are taken to carry out this prophecy, reared in a concealed cavern and conscripted, unwillingly, to halt this devastating war.
The original book series comprises 15 main volumes, along with additional books and a comic book version. Since the debut of the first book in 2012, they have achieved tremendous success, collectively selling more than 27 million copies worldwide. Critics have generally praised the books, which has caught the attention of streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, who recognize the series’ potential for screen adaptations.
2020 saw news break about an upcoming animated series adaptation of “Wings of Fire” at Netflix, a joint venture between ARRAY and Warner Bros. Animation. Notably, Ava DuVernay (known for directing “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Selma”) was attached to helm the project, which initially planned for ten 40-minute episodes. However, by 2022, it became public knowledge that this series had been scrapped. Sources claim the decision was made due to creative disagreements rather than financial or any other problems.
A premiere date hasn’t yet been set for the Wings of Fire series.
