As a long-time fan who grew up with the original Beetlejuice, it’s absolutely thrilling to see the return of this iconic film after 34 years! The fact that most of the original cast is back, including Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, is just mind-blowing.

The sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, Beetlejuice, is a significant cinematic achievement, not only because it fulfills fan expectations, but also due to the fact that almost every key actor from the original film has sustained a successful career in movies or TV. Remarkably, most of the surviving cast members from the original were available and eager to reprise their roles for this sequel.

The original Beetlejuice film stands out as a cult classic, largely thanks to the unique creativity of Tim Burton. For instance, there’s a plotline (which may be debatable now) where a mischievous and menacing ghost character portrayed by Michael Keaton, Beetlejuice, attempts to marry a sensitive teenage girl named Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder who is deeply immersed in the Goth culture.

During an interview with ComicBook, Winona Ryder shared how the real-world events and situations have shaped the narrative of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In the same conversation, she also expressed that after almost 40 years, she continues to nurture a glimmer of hope for Lydia and Beetlejuice’s relationship.

“[Speaker] Tim seemed to have a secret habit of connecting with many people, but it was always hush-hush. We would often visit his home where we’d chat, and he’d always say something like ‘Life just happens, and you discover who you are as you grow older…’ I believe this sentiment reflects much of what Tim Burton has experienced in his life… Everyone changes over time, except perhaps Beetlejuice, maybe. He is my ultimate goal. I truly hope Beetlejuice and Lydia will end up together! It’s a bit crazy, I know, but…”

Time alone will reveal whether Ryder subtly alluded to a plot point in his statement: The previews for Beetlejuice 2 appear to suggest that Beetlejuice might attempt to marry Lydia (or her daughter, Astrid) again. However, this wouldn’t sit well with Beetlejuice’s former spouse Delores (Monica Bellucci). It’s possible that by the film’s conclusion, Lydia could be forced to confront the choice she evaded in the original movie and actually go through with the ghostly wedding.

This discovery accidentally opens a gateway to the Afterlife! As chaos simmers on both sides, it won’t be long before someone utters Beetlejuice’s name three times and he makes his grand return, ready to stir up all sorts of mischief and havoc.
