This Winter season brings back hit shows like “Solo Leveling,” “The Apothecary Diaries,” “Shangri-La Frontier,” and “Dr. Stone,” as well as newcomers such as “Sakamoto Days.” While many anticipate a high-budget series to take the unofficial award for best opening theme, an unexpected winner has emerged: the underappreciated returning romance series on Netflix, “Blue Box.
Blue Box made its initial appearance on Netflix in October 2024. The first season of the anime adaptation based on Kouji Miura’s manga has been divided into two segments, known as “cours.” The opening theme for Cour 1, called “Same Blue,” by pop group Official HIGE DANdism, was quite enjoyable. However, the opening theme for Cour 2, which aired on Netflix on January 2nd, surpassed its predecessor and the openings of every other Winter 2025 anime in terms of impact.
Blue Box Cour 2 Features Winter 2025’s Best OP
Instead of a romantic comedy anime about high schoolers having an energetic hit song as its opening theme being unexpected, Cour 2 from the Blue Box first season surprisingly provided exactly that. The song, “Saraba,” by J-rock group Macaroni Empitsu, is ideal for introducing Chinatsu Kano and Taiki Inomata’s personal sports adventures and budding romance, serving as the perfect theme music.
Experiencing ‘Saraba’ feels like immersing myself in the essence of Blue Box. It masterfully blends a tranquil, laid-back ambiance with lively verses, mirroring the casual yet growing connection between Taiki and Chinatsu depicted in the show. The mellow tune evokes the relaxed atmosphere of the series, while the dynamic guitar and drums give it an energetic edge – a rhythm that resonates with their practice sessions. ‘Saraba’ is a song that can be enjoyed as I unwind or when I’m gearing up for my basketball or badminton training, channeling the spirit of competition.
Close Contenders for Best OP of Winter 2025
It might be hasty to claim that “Saraba” is the top opening theme for Winter 2025, given we’re only in the second week of January. However, the song itself is exceptional. Regarding other outstanding OPs this season, the one that stands out the most is “Frontiers” by Awich from Shangri-La Frontier Season 2. The show’s fourth opening theme is incredibly powerful and pairs beautifully with some of the most breathtaking animations of the Winter season.
In the latest lineup, “Hyakka Ryouran” by Lilas Ikuta from “The Apothecary Diaries” and “ReawakerR” by LiSa and Felix of Stray Kids for “Solo Leveling’s” second season are both standout candidates. On the other hand, the opening track for “Sakamoto Days,” titled “Run, Sakamoto, Run” by Vaundy, seems to be a controversial choice this season, as some fans appreciate the new tune while others feel it doesn’t align with the energetic action-shonen style of the series.
Every Thursday, you can find new installments of “Blue Box” streaming on Netflix. This beloved romance anime focuses on two ambitious teenagers, Chinatsu and Taiki, one with a passion for basketball, the other for badminton. As they navigate their high school years, they also grapple with their deepening feelings for each other.
