Witch Hat Atelier Creator Is Still Humbled by the Series' Success

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for “Witch Hat Atelier” has been brewing like a potion in my heart since its inception in 2016. Having traversed countless virtual worlds and read numerous manga series, I can genuinely say that this one resonates on an entirely different level.

The enchanting world of Witch Hat Atelier will transition from comic pages to screens next year with its upcoming anime debut, leaving the series’ creator, Kamome Shirahama, deeply moved by the franchise’s widespread success. Shirahama’s original manga series was initially published in Kodansha’s Morning Two magazine back in 2016, and has since gained an enormous fanbase both domestically and internationally over the years. The eagerly anticipated anime adaptation is finally on its way, catapulting the creator into a whole new universe of opportunities.

Reflecting back on our conversation at Anime Expo 2024 this past summer, I can’t help but reminisce about the journey of “Witch Hat Atelier” and how my perspective has evolved along with its success. As I penned the initial manga, I envisioned a niche audience who could truly connect with the intricate emotions I aimed to convey. I would often experiment with different styles, confident that my creative freedom would appeal to this intimate group.

Growing resigned to my seemingly un-magical existence, I was on the verge of abandoning my dream…that is, until I encountered Qifrey, a mysterious traveler who claims to be a magician. Witnessing him perform magic in an extraordinary fashion, I began to question the conventional wisdom that one cannot become a magician, and found myself closer than ever to realizing my magical dream.
