Witch Hat Atelier Creator Shares First Reaction to the Anime

As a long-time fan of manga and anime, I’ve seen my fair share of magical worlds filled with witches, spells, and dragons. But when it comes to Witch Hat Atelier, even the most jaded of us are left spellbound! Kamome Shirahama’s creation has captured our hearts since its inception in 2016, and now, we’re finally getting an anime adaptation in 2025.

The animated series “Witch Hat Atelier” won’t air until next year, but it’s already one of the most eagerly awaited by fans. This magical show began in July 2016 thanks to creator Kamome Shirahama, and fans quickly grew fond of the character Coco. Soon, this young witch will appear on TV with an anime produced by Bug Films, as the team is currently busy at work. Notably, Shirahama has caught a glimpse of some of the anime herself, and she recently shared her initial thoughts during a conversation with ComicBook.a.

In Los Angeles, the originator of Witch Hat Atelier shared insights about their initial thoughts on the animated series. It appears this artist never envisioned a reality where Coco would come to life on screen. Regarding the anime, she’ll struggle to accept its authenticity until fans across the board can view it together.

When creating the manga, there’s always a small part of me hoping it might someday become an anime. In essence, I consider this project as a realization of that aspiration. However, that ambition does bring added responsibilities too.

As someone who has been involved in the creation and promotion of several anime adaptations, I can attest that there is no substitute for the excitement and validation that comes with finally seeing your work air on television. The planning stages and approval processes are crucial, but they pale in comparison to the moment when the fans’ reactions start pouring in. The anticipation, the nervousness, and the ultimate satisfaction of knowing that you’ve brought joy to so many people through your art – these are feelings that I will never forget. It is only then, when the anime goes on air and the fans share their thoughts, that I truly feel like we have successfully adapted our creation into a beloved part of popular culture.

It’s evident that Shirahama is handling the Witch Hat Atelier anime smoothly despite the increased responsibilities. However, fans will need to be patient as the series won’t arrive until 2025. Crunchyroll has secured the rights for its streaming in the US. In the interim, you can explore Shirahama’s manga, which is published by Kodansha. For further details on Witch Hat Atelier, take a look at its official synopsis provided below:

In a realm where magic spells and dragons are commonplace, I, Coco, yearn for an extraordinary life: I aspire to be a witch. Yet, the whispers echo through our town that only those born with the gift can wield magic, a gift I was not bestowed. Resigned to my mundane existence, I was on the brink of abandoning my dream to become a witch…until I crossed paths with Qifrey, a nomadic magician shrouded in mystery. After clandestinely witnessing Qifrey casting spells in ways I’d never seen before, I began to question the long-held belief that only the born can use magic, and realized that my magical destiny might not be as unattainable as I once thought…
