As a long-time admirer of the anime industry, I must say that Ayumu Watanabe has undeniably left his mark on this dynamic field. From the captivating tales of Komi Can’t Communicate to the intriguing twists of Great Pretender, and even the beloved Doraemon and Ace Attorney, Watanabe’s work has consistently captivated audiences worldwide.
For quite some time, Ayumu Watanabe has made significant contributions to the world of anime. So far, this skilled director has held key roles in various popular productions such as “Komi Can’t Communicate”, “Great Pretender”, “Doraemon”, “Ace Attorney” and many others. Despite his vast experience in this medium, Ayumu is now tackling a substantial new challenge with the upcoming anime adaptation of “Witch Hat Atelier“. Notably, this manga has already garnered considerable success prior to the confirmation of its anime adaptation. Recently, we at ComicBook had the chance to converse with the director about his apprehensions regarding animating Coco’s tale.
As a die-hard fan myself, discussing with Watanabe at this year’s Anime Expo about the highly anticipated anime adaptation of “Witch Hat Atelier” in 2025 left me both thrilled and anxious. The entire production team and staff are avid fans of the series, which is fantastic for the director but has its challenges. With so much affection for the source material, some scenes are taking longer than expected to complete, causing a slight concern about our schedule. Despite this, I’m genuinely excited about where we’re heading with this project.
Witch Hat Atelier – 2025’s Biggest Anime?
Ayumu Watanabe isn’t the only one animating Witch Hat Atelier; it will also be brought to life by Bug Films, a production house renowned for their work on series such as Zom 100: Bucket List of The Dead, Mononoke, and The Ancient Magus’ Bride.
If you haven’t explored the magical realm of Witch Hat Atelier yet, you can delve into its English version through Kodansha. According to the publisher, this series takes place in a world where magic and dragons are commonplace. Coco, our protagonist, dreams of becoming a witch despite not being born with magical abilities. However, everyone believes that magicians are innately gifted, and Coco is about to abandon her dream when she encounters Qifrey, an enigmatic traveler magician. Watching him perform magic in ways she’s never seen before piques her curiosity, leading her to question the commonly held belief that magic can only be performed by those born with it. This realization may bring Coco closer to her dream of becoming a witch than she thought possible.
