Witch Mountain Reboot Gets Disappointing Update From Bryce Dallas Howard

As a fan who has followed Bryce Dallas Howard‘s career with great anticipation, it’s disheartening to hear about the cancellation of the “Escape to Witch Mountain” series. It seemed like another exciting project for her and an intriguing take on a beloved franchise. I remember being thrilled when she was announced as the director for the pilot, and the cast looked promising too!

It’s been nearly two years since Disney+ gave the go-ahead for a TV pilot adaptation of Escape to Witch Mountain and its sequels, but director Bryce Dallas Howard hasn’t shared much positive information about the project’s progress. Unfortunately, it seems that the series is not moving forward, casting serious doubt on whether the completed pilot will ever be aired. The Jurassic World star was part of the cast along with Isabel Gravitt (The Watcher), Levi Miller (Streamline), Bianca “b” Norwood (WeCrashed), and Jackson Kelly (Straight Man)).

1975’s film titled “Journey to Witch Mountain” follows the story of two orphans endowed with psychic abilities on their quest to reach the titular mountain, while eluding a wealthy, eccentric pursuer infatuated with the supernatural. The movie led to two sequels, a television reimagining, and a subsequent semi-remake.

During a panel at Fan Expo Canada, Howard shared with Maggie Lovitt from Collider that, regrettably, something they had been working on didn’t come to fruition. He explained that it was a fantastic project, and everyone involved loved filming it in Toronto. Sometimes projects get made, and sometimes they don’t, which is the reality of this business.

Witch Mountain was planned as Howard’s next project with Disney, following her work on Star Wars series like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, where she directed episodes, and Pete’s Dragon live-action remake, where she acted. It is also rumored that she will make her directorial debut in a feature film for the reboot of Disney’s Flight of the Navigator.

In both attempts at rejuvenating the Witch Mountain series, actors who later achieved great fame graced the screen. The 1995 version, produced for Disney’s Wonderful World, featured Elisabeth Moss before her Mad Men success and Brad Dourif of Chucky fame. This was followed in 2009 by a cinematic release, Race to Witch Mountain, starring Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, and Alexander Ludwig.

The objective behind updating this property is to delve into a storyline similar to “two teenagers who unexpectedly gain peculiar powers and uncover that their seemingly peaceful neighborhood might not be as perfect as it appears.” Co-written by Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas, who also serve as executive producers for the show, the pilot was directed by Augustine Frizzell, who is also an executive producer. John Fox and John Davis from Davis Entertainment, Gary Marsh, and others are listed as executive producers on this pilot.
