With Joy in her heart

As a movie lover who has had the privilege of being part of some incredible productions this year, I must say that joining the Doctor for his festive adventure in “Doctor Who: Joy to the World” is nothing short of exhilarating! It’s been an exhausting yet delightful journey, from comedy dramas like “Big Mood” and “Bridgerton” to now embarking on this exciting new adventure.

Add Doctor Who: Joy to the World to your watchlist

Have you been captivating audiences with your roles in “Big Mood,” “Bridgerton,” and the Doctor’s holiday escapade? Are you finding it tiring keeping up with all the accolades?

This has been an incredible year for me. It was filled with numerous travels – approximately eight different countries, as part of the Bridgerton promotional tour – and I am grateful for these experiences. What makes this busy year even more special is that it saw the release of two shows I can truly be proud of. To cap off this extraordinary year, I’ll get to enjoy watching Doctor Who, a show that my family can watch together. It’s rare for me to have something suitable for family viewing, so I am delighted about this!

What else do you enjoy watching at Christmas?

I really love Little Women, and I will watch both of the recent movies. I’ll start with the 1994 one, because I grew up with that. My plan is to have it on when I’m doing the tree, which I haven’t done yet, because I like a real tree and I don’t want it to collapse on me and look very, very sad by Christmas Day.

What are your own Christmas traditions?

Every year, my mom, sister, and I engage in a delightful yet spirited negotiation over who will prepare which dish for our Christmas feast. While I enjoy being in the kitchen, my controlling nature often finds its way into this culinary affair, especially when it comes to deciding on the perfect potatoes. Moreover, crafting delectable canapés for Christmas Day is one of my favorite traditions. Christmas meals are a joy that I always look forward to. In the coming weeks, I’ll be hosting a festive gathering with friends and encouraging everyone to contribute their special dish to make our shared meal even more delicious.

Speaking of old friends, do you keep in touch with the Derry Girls gang?

Louisa Harland and I are in constant communication – she stopped by my house recently. However, everyone’s been swamped with work! I have a bottle of champagne that we received during the wrap party for series one, and I’ve been promising to host a dinner where we’d all toast Siobhán McSweeney’s well-deserved BAFTA win. It’s been such a wait.

It’s lovely to do something I can actually watch with my family!

How does it strike you that from now on, certain fans will always be drawn to talking about the television series, Doctor Who?

What can we expect from the Christmas special, Joy to the World?

This piece is wonderfully crafted, filled with humor, heartbreak, action, suspense, and aliens. It’s a perfect choice for viewing after Christmas dinner. I must say, it feels like a warm welcome home with Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies at the helm, not to mention Ncuti Gatwa who exudes charm in real life. I feel fortunate to be part of this journey.

If you had the chance to spend Christmas at any point in history, which era or time period would you choose to visit?

In one of the scenes, the Doctor boards the Orient Express. I was captivated by its stunning beauty and requested a visit. There’s an allure about train travel, especially during the 1930s, with its glamourous charm. New Year’s Eve on such a magnificent train would be breathtaking. It seems like the ideal way to usher in 2025.
