With minutes to spare, Helldivers 2 players complete the Illuminate Major Order to save Calypso — but you and I both know that was only the first wave

As an observer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the Calypso Major Order in Helldivers 2 was nothing short of exhilarating. The intensity and urgency of the campaign were reminiscent of the good old days when cooperative multiplayer games demanded every ounce of your focus and strategy.

2 days following the surprise reveal of the Illuminate faction by Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios at The Game Awards, countless elite soldiers from Super Earth successfully warded off an invasion by squid-like aliens in the system of Calypso. This accomplishment fulfilled the necessary Major Order, granting all members of the Super Earth fleet with 50 Warbond Medals and a forthcoming strategy for Fast Recon Vehicles, which players have been discovering during their missions on Calypso.

The Major Order to push back the Illuminate’s offensive was unquestionably one of the most intense (if not the most intense) campaigns of the Galactic War thus far, with the Helldivers fighting the invaders tooth and nail around the clock for 48+ hours. They completed it a mere 10 minutes before the Level 96 invasion (presumably, 100 is the max difficulty on this newly added scale) was slated to succeed — a victory by the skin of Lady Liberty’s teeth, if I’ve ever seen one.

As a researcher studying gaming trends, I can’t help but attribute a significant portion of this project’s triumph to the surge in Helldivers 2 on Steam post-Omens of Tyranny update. Hordes of gamers have flocked to the battlefield to confront the Illuminate and sample equipment from the Urban Legend Premium Warbond-like battle pass. Notably, Arrowhead’s chief creative officer, Johan Pilestedt, announced on social media that over a million players jumped into the action within 24 hours of the Illuminate’s arrival. SteamDB data indicates that around 80,000 to 130,000 Super Earth space marines were playing simultaneously during the Major Order (the peak was 150,153 on Saturday evening). The game has also regained its position as a Steam Top Seller and even briefly outranked contemporary heavyweights like Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2.

With the failure of Illuminate’s takeover of Calypso, unfortunately, they are not presently an option for combat. Frankly, I find this disheartening as they offered an exceptional challenge and excitement as a new enemy type. However, despite my lamenting the absence of the Democracy Officer, I’ve been relentlessly battling Voteless swarms and Overseer troops to protect our colony planet. The thrill of it all has me eagerly anticipating another chance to engage them once more.

Although Super Earth High Command claims that the surviving Illuminate forces from the First Galactic War, who were just a “small cell” according to them, are insignificant and will be eliminated – “as soon as they’re found, they’ll be wiped out” – it’s evident that the Illuminate are poised for a return, possibly even imminently. In fact, I find it surprising that we haven’t already launched another offensive against their alien armies following our victory.

If you’re curious, no new Major Order has been issued as of now. Therefore, the Helldivers must return to either the Terminid or Automaton frontlines to maintain Managed Democracy. As for the bots, they’ve been getting dangerously close to Super Earth. In the near future, I anticipate that the Illuminate will escalate their operations in the galaxy’s southern regions with a larger offensive.

The Calypso Major Order was easily one of the most exciting ones in Helldivers 2’s history, as it’s been awesome seeing the community frantically come together to work out strategies, make loadouts, and share tips to overcome the Illuminate’s unique blend of zombie hordes, burly melee and airborne shock troops, and towering walkers that punish slow movement in the open. Participating in its final hours was also an absolute blast, and considering how down to the wire it came, my friends and I genuinely felt like we had an impact on the community’s wider effort when we burned through a few operations this afternoon.

To sum up, Arrowhead’s PC and PS5 live-service co-op shooter had an outstanding debut year, culminating in a flawless finale. Despite my opinion, which might provoke disagreement, I believe it was more deserving of the Game of the Year nomination than Black Myth: Wukong or Elden Ring’s DLC. However, I am content that it won Best Multiplayer and Best Ongoing at The Game Awards instead.
