More details about Sudiksha Konanki‘s disappearance are coming to light.
While authorities persistently hunt for the missing University of Pittsburgh student, who vanished on March 5 during a spring break vacation in the Dominican Republic, a crucial eyewitness has disclosed his interaction with her on the beach.
In simpler terms, a man (not considered a suspect by Dominican Republic authorities) stated that he and his companion ran into Konanki and her group following their return to the Riu República Resort from a party. Although Virginia’s Loudon County Sheriff’s Office has no control over the case, they have dispatched detectives to Punta Cana to help on the U.S. side. The Loudon County authorities have marked the unnamed man as someone who warrants attention in this investigation.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office representative, Thomas Julia, explained to NBC News that the individual they are focusing on is not necessarily a suspect in the current investigation, as this is still regarded as a missing persons case and not a criminal matter.
In my zealous enthusiasm, I shared an evening with companions at a local watering hole on the 12th of March, as reported by NBC News. We indulged in beverages, raised glasses for some spirited toasts, and one among us proposed a spontaneous trip to the sandy shores.
In the interview, the witness mentioned that following the arrangement of his items on a nearby chair, he along with Konanki ventured into water up to their waist, engaging in conversation and sharing a brief kiss.
He mentioned that a large wave approached and quickly carried them along with the current. Later, he added, as soon as we managed to rise above the water, we attempted to seek assistance, but there was no one around. (A spokesperson for Riu confirmed to People via email on March 11 that red flags had been set up on the beach prior to the incident as a caution for “strong currents and high waves.”)
As a certified lifeguard, I recounted to the authorities that in an attempt to save Konanki, I took hold of her and kept her close under my arm while swimming towards the shore. I persistently worked on helping her breathe, even as I myself struggled to catch mine amidst our return to the beach.
He admitted that he drank too much seawater, which caused him to feel faint multiple times. Eventually, he managed to reach the sandy shore and dragged her along with him. She then collected her things as the tide had displaced them.
He added, “She wasn’t completely out of the water; it reached up to our knees where she was standing. She seemed to be walking at an angle in the water. The last moment I saw her, I asked if she was alright. Unfortunately, before I could hear her response, I began vomiting the seawater I had swallowed.
After looking around, he stated that there was no one visible on the beach, leading him to believe that she must have picked up her things and departed.
He remembered feeling quite exhausted and drained. He decided to rest on a beach chair since he didn’t have the energy to go anywhere else. The sun and mosquito bites roused him from his slumber. He then retrieved his phone from his friend’s room and returned to his own room for more sleep.
His friend inquired whether he was aware of Konanki’s location the following day. He responded by stating that he believed she had retired to her room, however, his friend informed him that she hadn’t come back instead.
Three Dominican officials linked to the investigation have shared with ABC News their suspicion that Konanki may have drowned, although no body has surfaced yet. However, Loudon County Sheriff Mike Chapman remains steadfast in his pursuit for a definitive resolution.
He stated on the show Banfield on NewsNation, March 10th, “It’s far too soon to jump to conclusions like that. I haven’t seen her in any form here, so it’s crucial we carry out a thorough investigation instead. We are collaborating closely with Dominican authorities to do just that.

Sudiksha Konanki traveled to the Dominican Republic on March 3.
This 20-year-old, along with five companions, is traveling to the Dominican Republic to celebrate the University of Pittsburgh’s spring break together.
Konanki had been staying at the Hotel Riu Palace Punta Cana, an all-inclusive resort.
In the wake of her vanishing, I’ve been collaborating closely with local law enforcement agencies, such as the police and navy, to carry out a comprehensive search. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends during these trying times. Rest assured, we are doing everything within our capabilities to provide assistance in this situation.
On March 6, it was reported that Konanki went missing. Her friends had gone for a walk on the beach earlier in the day but did not return with her. It is thought that she vanished some time between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. that same morning.
After her disappearance, local authorities initiated an investigation into the matter. Local emergency services reported conducting searches both on land and at sea, while a representative of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia (Konanki’s hometown) informed NBC News that investigations encompassed gathering video footage, examining cellphone data, and interviewing individuals who were with Konanki.
On March 9, officials told ABC News they believe Konanki died by drowning.
As per a police report mentioned in ABC News, during their beach stroll, the majority of the group chose to return to the hotel at some point during the night. However, one friend stayed with Konanki. It appears that this duo then decided to take a swim, and according to the police report, they were swept away by a strong wave.
According to reports, officials stated that the individuals who were with Konanki were interrogated by the police, yet no charges have been filed against them.
After Konanki disappeared, her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, informed CNN that she was on a journey prior to commencing her pre-medical studies.
He commented, “My child is a wonderful young lady. She’s driven and has aspirations for a profession in the medical field.
