As an ardent admirer of historical dramas and the Tudor era, I must say that the upcoming season of Wolf Hall has me absolutely thrilled! The first season was a masterpiece, expertly capturing the intrigue, politics, and drama of Henry VIII’s court. With the debut of the trailer for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light, I can sense the tension building once again, as we delve deeper into the life of Thomas Cromwell, played brilliantly by Mark Rylance.
After it was revealed that Wolf Hall season 2, titled The Mirror and the Light, is set to premiere on Sunday, 10th November, the initial preview for the much-awaited series has been unveiled.
The trailer reintroduces us to Mark Rylance’s Thomas Cromwell and Damian Lewis’s King Henry VIII, as well as to the high-stakes world of Tudor England.
The trailer showcases brief appearances of Henry’s latest spouse, Jane Seymour (portrayed by Kate Phillips), along with Lilit Lesser as Lady Mary, Thomas Brodie-Sangster in the role of Rafe Sadler, Charlie Rowe playing Gregory Cromwell, Harry Melling as Thomas Wriothesley, Hannah Khalique-Brown as Dorothea, and Pip Carter depicting Sir Geoffrey Pole.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Pryce’s Cardinal Wolsey, who will feature in flashbacks, is also seen.

In the upcoming series, we’ll see other notable actors like Timothy Spall portraying the Duke of Norfolk, Harriet Walter stepping into the role of Lady Margaret Pole, Alex Jennings taking on Stephen Gardiner, Tom Mothersdale becoming Richard Riche, Karim Kadjar as Eustache Chapuys, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Bess Oughtred, Ellie de Lange as Jenneke, and Lydia Leonard as Jane Rochford.
The initial season of Wolf Hall, based on the first two books from Hilary Mantel’s Cromwell trilogy, was premiered back in 2015. Nearly a full decade has passed since then.
In May, 1536, Anne Boleyn, Henry’s second queen, and five members of her inner circle have been executed.
Following the bloodshed, Thomas Cromwell rises from the fray, advancing further into power and prosperity, as King Henry, his strong mentor, finds temporary contentment with his third wife, Jane Seymour.
In a period marked by brutality and bloodshed, Cromwell, without the support of a powerful family or personal troops, must grapple with the ethical dilemmas that come with wielding power. He finds himself in a precarious position, torn between his moral compass and the need for self-preservation. With King Henry VIII having beheaded his queen, no one can claim absolute safety.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’d rephrase that intriguing passage like this: “Amidst rebellion brewing at home and treacherous plots abroad, along with the looming specter of invasion pushing my rule to its limits, my imaginative mind, as resilient as Cromwell’s, envisions a transformed nation in the reflection of tomorrow. The entirety of England stands before me, brimming with potential for groundbreaking innovation and religious reformation. However, as fate would have it, my adversaries are covertly amassing in the shadows.
As a movie buff pondering, I can’t help but wonder: For how long can one endure the merciless and unpredictable scrutiny of Henry?
Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light comes to BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 10th November.
