For decades, whispers about a remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 movie “Escape from New York” have circulated, but so far, there hasn’t been enough solid support for it to materialize. Leigh Whannell, who directed the “Wolf Man“, was once linked to this project, having also previously been connected to the Universal Monster reboot before leaving and eventually going back. With this pattern in mind, fans have speculated whether Whannell might return to “Escape from New York”, although the director himself has recently expressed doubts about it happening. The “Wolf Man” is set to hit theaters on January 17th.
It’s amusing how movies can fail to materialize due to numerous factors. For instance, ‘We lost the rights’ or ‘I’m not clicking with the producers,’ are some common reasons. Whannell explained this during an interview with ComicBook, discussing the potential revival of Escape from New York. He mentioned that projects seem to come to fruition by chance, often leaving one to exclaim, ‘Amazingly, this one actually happened.’ Therefore, while there’s a possibility for Escape from New York to resurface, Whannell isn’t actively working on it at the moment.
Since 2019, rumors have circulated about Whannell developing “Escape from New York,” but Hollywood’s subsequent challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, have delayed progress. Recently, Radio Silence, known for their work on the latest “Scream” sequels and “Abigail,” has been linked to the project. Directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin were initially involved in 2022, but they later announced their departure from the reboot last year.
In response to ComicBook’s question in May 2024, Gillett stated, “Regrettably, we haven’t been working on the project as planned. It seems that titles like this tend to circulate for a while, and they’ve attempted to kickstart it several times. I believe the rights issue is complex, and there’s a time limit on it, which we couldn’t meet. However, the interest in the project remains, and we’ve discussed it occasionally, but as of now, we don’t have an official involvement.
For quite some time now, whispers about a fresh spin on this concept have been circulating, even hinting at Robert Rodriguez potentially delving into a revised narrative. As of yet, it remains unclear whether a new visionary will step forward to breathe life into this captivating storyline, and when that might occur.
As fans wait for any updates on a new Escape from New York, they can check out Whannell’s Wolf Man.
The film titled “Wolf Man” is introduced as follows: “Imagine if someone you cared for transformed into something unrecognizable. Produced by Blumhouse and the mastermind behind the gripping contemporary horror story The Invisible Man, Leigh Whannell, comes a blood-curdling new werewolf terror: Wolf Man. Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) plays Blake, a San Francisco husband and father who inherits his distant rural Oregon childhood home after his father disappears and is believed to be deceased. With his marriage to his successful wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner from Ozark and Inventing Anna), on the rocks, Blake convinces Charlotte to escape the city and visit the property with their daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth from Hullraisers and Coma).
However, when the family reaches the farmhouse under the cover of night, they’re ambushed by an unknown beast. In a panic, they barricade themselves inside the house as the creature circles the property. As the hours tick by, Blake exhibits bizarre behavior and changes into something unfamiliar, leaving Charlotte to ponder if the menace within their home is more perilous than the threat outside. The movie features Sam Jaeger (known from “The Handmaid’s Tale”), Ben Prendergast (from “The Sojourn Audio Drama”), and Benedict Hardie (from “The Invisible Man”).
Keep an eye out for fresh news regarding the upcoming “Escape from New York” remake. Catch the “Werewolf” movie starting January 17th at cinemas near you.
