Wolf Man: Potential First Look at New Universal Monster Has Fans Confused

As a lifelong fan of the Universal Monsters, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about Leigh Whannell’s take on The Wolf Man. With his impressive track record, I had high hopes for this new chapter in the saga of the cursed werewolf. However, the first glimpse we got at Halloween Horror Nights left me scratching my head more than anything else.

The Wolf Man is one of the most iconic figures in the roster of Universal Monsters, with The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell delivering an all-new Wolf Man in 2025. Fans are wondering how the filmmaker will revive and reimagine the beast for contemporary audiences, and while the very first glimpse at the project came in the form of promotional art last week, a new video taken at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort might have given us our first glimpse at the figure. With how unceremonious this reveal is, fans have been left a bit confused as to whether this is the official look for the titular character, while also wondering how the monster will look within the context of the movie. Wolf Man is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2025.

As a thrill-seeking gamer, I’ve just got word that the Wolf Man from the highly anticipated Blumhouse flick has officially crashed the party at Halloween Horror Nights! That’s right, folks, my eyes couldn’t believe it when I spotted him during this week’s spooky soiree. HHNSpeculationMatt shared the exclusive footage to back it up!

Instead of appearing like any fearsome movie monsters, this character seems more like a weathered old man with a long white beard and massive claws resembling those of a wolf. Harlan Wannell’s Invisible Man inspired a new interpretation where the protagonist donned an optic suit that manipulated light invisibility, leaving it uncertain if he is also altering the concept of a “Wolf Man” in a similar fashion

The majority of responses to the video clip showed a blend of perplexity and dismay, with @TheGhostHost exclaiming, “Who on earth is accountable for that?! Someone ought to take responsibility for this design, as it certainly doesn’t resemble a wolfman!” Meanwhile, @scary_scarah playfully joked, “This must be the version of a werewolf Blumhouse has in mind, chuckling emoji.”

Fans are assuming that this might not be the ultimate appearance of the main character in the upcoming movie, as @pumpkin_gaymer wonders if it could be a work-in-progress. @JJ_Kresl also thinks it’s unlikely to be the final look for the film. They remain enthusiastic about the movie nonetheless

Regardless of how the actor portraying the Wolf Man appears in real life, his on-screen presence in the upcoming film may prove to be more impactful. It’s conceivable that the current glimpse of the character has sparked underwhelming reactions, which could lead Blumhouse to unveil a more captivating sneak peek of the movie sooner as opposed to later

In this upcoming movie, Christopher Abbott takes on the main role. Actresses Julia Garner from “Ozark” and Sam Jaeger from “The Handmaid’s Tale” are also featured in the film. The screenplay was penned by Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo. Jason Blum and his company, Blumhouse Productions, as well as Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner, Whannell, and Ryan Gosling (who has been associated with the project since 2020) all serve as executive producers for this production
