Universal Monsters, iconic figures in cinema, have been revitalized in numerous ways over time and have sparked endless imitations. The idea of reimagining the 1941 classic “The Wolf Man” would be met with enthusiasm by many viewers, but the disappointing 2010 film “The Wolfman” delayed this until the recent release of “Wolf Man.” The upcoming version of the story gains confidence from fans and producer Beatriz Sequeira because it’s been created by writer/director Leigh Whannell, who previously achieved success with “The Invisible Man.” “Wolf Man” will be in theaters on January 17th.
Sequeira expressed to ComicBook about the project that he has complete faith in him, almost as if saying, “Trust Leigh,” and given their previous collaboration on Invisible Man, it felt right. When I saw it, I was convinced, thinking, “This is definitely happening.
Although Sequeira initially trusted Whannell’s involvement, the release of “The Wolf Man” this weekend has undergone alterations since its initial announcement back in 2020. Originally, Ryan Gosling was slated to star, with Whannell joining later on. However, director Derek Cianfrance took over from Whannell, and Christopher Abbott replaced Gosling. Despite these shifts, Sequeira stated that the final product aligns with Whannell’s original concept for the film.
The producer affirmed that Leigh’s adaptation hasn’t undergone significant alterations. They aimed for a more realistic portrayal of the Wolf Man in the film, and this vision has remained consistent throughout, resulting in a more human narrative centered around the Wolf Man.
The movie titled “Wolf Man” is portrayed as follows: Imagine if someone you deeply care for transforms into something unfathomable. Produced by Blumhouse and the creative mind of writer-director Leigh Whannell, who gave us the spine-chilling modern monster story “The Invisible Man“, we present a heart-pounding new werewolf terror: “Wolf Man“. The talented Christopher Abbott (known for “Poor Things” and “It Comes at Night“) plays Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who unexpectedly inherits his secluded childhood home in rural Oregon following the disappearance of his father, presumed dead. With his relationship with his high-powered wife, Charlotte (award-winning actress Julia Garner from “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna“) on the rocks, Blake convinces Charlotte to take a break from city life and visit the property with their daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth from “Hullraisers” and “Coma” ).
However, when the family reaches the farmhouse late at night, they’re unexpectedly assaulted by an unknown beast. Panicking, they barricade themselves inside the house as the creature circles around it. As the long night continues, Blake starts acting oddly and transforms into something unfamiliar, leaving Charlotte to contemplate whether the menace within their home is more dangerous than the threat outside. The movie features Sam Jaeger (from “The Handmaid’s Tale”), Ben Prendergast (from “The Sojourn Audio Drama”), and Benedict Hardie (from “The Invisible Man”).
In the process of creating a more contemporary take on the “Wolf Man” character, it was crucial to reconsider how this creature would appear in our world. The finished on-screen design of the creature is a testament to both director James Wan’s vision and makeup designer Arjen Tuiten’s skill.
The producer explained that he connected [Whannell] with Arjen Tuiten, a talented makeup designer, as he felt we required someone creative and enthusiastic for our monster’s appearance. They quickly bonded, and when we first saw the maquette, I thought, ‘That’s exactly what we needed.’
Wolf Man hits theaters on January 17th.
