Universal Pictures’ movie titled “The Wolf Man” was one of the later introductions to their lineup of Universal Monsters, yet few would dispute that the central werewolf character is a beloved fan choice. Although this particular character may not have been as frequently reprised on the big screen compared to characters such as Dracula or Frankenstein’s Monster, it has been instrumental in fueling werewolf-themed cinema for decades. In a fresh interpretation of the storyline, Christopher Abbott portrays a man who experiences a brutal encounter with an unseen creature, triggering a chilling transformation while at his family’s farmhouse. “Wolf Man” will be available in theaters on January 17th.
According to Abbott, the research for this role required more focus on subjects similar to National Geographic documentaries compared to other films. He elaborated that the character’s primal nature affected his preparation techniques. As the process unfolds, there might be an 80% human behavior and 20% animal-like responses. However, these percentages can change over time. The key difference lies in how a human would respond to certain situations compared to an animal – for instance, a human may react one way when feeling unwell or scared, whereas an animal might display different behaviors under the same circumstances.
As a cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: “In the world of chilling modern monster tales, I find myself drawn to ‘Wolf Man’. This gripping new horror is brought to us by Blumhouse and visionary director Leigh Whannell, the mastermind behind ‘The Invisible Man’. Set in a rural Oregon home inherited by golden globe nominee Christopher Abbott (of ‘Poor Things’ and ‘It Comes at Night’), after his father mysteriously disappears. His marriage with high-powered wife, Julia Garner (Oscar-winning actress from ‘Ozark’ and ‘Inventing Anna’), on the rocks, they decide to take a break from the city and visit this remote property with their daughter Matlida Firth (known for ‘Hullraisers’ and ‘Coma’).
However, as the family reaches the farmhouse under cover of night, they’re suddenly ambushed by a hidden beast, causing them to frantically barricade themselves within the house while the creature circles outside. As the darkness deepens, though, Blake exhibits bizarre behavior and morphs into an unfamiliar form. This leaves Charlotte in a tough predicament: she must decide if the menace inside their home is more dangerous than the threat lurking outside. The movie also features Sam Jaeger (from The Handmaid’s Tale), Ben Prendergast (from The Sojourn Audio Drama) and Benedict Hardie (from The Invisible Man)).
Although the movie wasn’t shot chronologically, Abbott explained that the use of prosthetics during filming acted as a convenient guide for him, indicating the progression of his character’s terrifying metamorphosis.
The actor shared that by doing all the preparations ahead of time, he needs to keep track of his progress mentally, but this is beneficial because the prosthetics help him recall what phase he should be in. He praised makeup designer Arjen Tuiten for his exceptional work, noting that his attention to detail was incredibly precise. Once he can recognize himself as being in stage one, two, or three, he can easily keep track of where he mentally needs to be.
In the original 1941 film, Lon Chaney Jr. portrayed the Wolf Man character, while Benicio del Toro assumed the role for the 2010 reboot. Over the past century, numerous actors have donned the role of werewolves in horror films, but the rich history and iconic nature of the Wolf Man set this particular project apart.
In essence, Abbott mentioned that he had watched numerous versions of The Wolf Man and appreciated their unique qualities, be it the original, Benicio’s portrayal, Jack Nicholson in “Wolf”, or “An American Werewolf in London”, which has a comedic twist. He explained that while the character essentially stays the same, the underlying messages and themes have evolved, making him feel free to bring his own interpretation rather than simply replicating a role. Unlike characters like Batman, The Wolf Man offers room for individual creativity due to its distinct narrative.
Wolf Man lands in theaters on January 17th.
