In a nod to its classic roots, Ultimate Wolverine serves as a throwback comic book in every sense. This revamped Wolverine character is a formidable beast, now under the grasp of the Eurasian Republic, blending elements from the Weapon X Wolverine and Winter Soldier narratives. Readers have borne witness to the measures taken by the Eurasian Republic to subdue him, as well as his brutal slaying of former allies. In issue #5 of May’s Ultimate Wolverine, we were treated to a showdown between the new Sabretooth and Wolverine, with the latter coming up short against the Winter Soldier. The climax arrives in issue #6, as the Resistance – the rebels opposed to the Eurasian Republic – make their move to shatter the mind-control mechanisms that have held him captive.
In the Eurasian Republic, they employed telepathy to manipulate Wolverine. The Counterforce, however, counters this – enter David Haller, or ‘One’ in the 616 universe. As the plot thickens, the comic unveils that Wolverine’s true adversary isn’t the powerful mental projections of the Rasputins and Omega Red; instead, it’s his own self. This twist is fascinating, and it aligns perfectly with Wolverine’s character development. Over the years, he has encountered numerous foes, but none have caused him as much pain as himself.
Wolverine Has Always Had to Fight Against the Beast Inside of Himself
Long-term X-Men fans have witnessed numerous mental battles, as the X-Men’s psychics often strive to free their teammates from the influence of others. In Ultimate Wolverine #6, readers find Wolverine engaged in a psychic battle against projections of Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red. While this is typical, things take an unexpected twist when Wolverine encounters his greatest adversary – himself. This concept isn’t new to Wolverine comics; over time, Wolverine has consistently battled the inner demon within him. However, Ultimate Wolverine #6 presents this struggle in a unique way. For years, Wolverine has been learning various methods to restrain his berserker rages, and any fight could have triggered these outbursts. He had to learn to control himself, and he always succeeded. But there was more to Wolverine’s internal struggles than just his violent tendencies; it was merely the most apparent battle he faced.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the tormented soul of Wolverine, the adamantium-clawed mutant. Almost as soon as his powers surfaced, loss was an inescapable part of his life. Each subsequent loss hardened him, pushing him to maintain a distance from others. I’ve often felt that anyone who dared to approach him would meet an untimely end, so he learned to keep everyone at arm’s length. His nomadic existence was a testament to his solitary nature. There were moments when even Wolverine feared the monster within him, as he felt it was all he deserved.
Over the years, Wolverine has defined himself by his darkest deeds, seeking out opportunities to feed the beast lurking inside him. His past is littered with bloodshed, a testament to his self-imposed destiny. But why has this violent past consumed so much of Wolverine’s life? Because he fears the monster within so deeply that embracing it seems preferable to being consumed by it.
In the 616 universe, Wolverine learned to harness the beast inside him for his own benefit. It appears the Eurasian Republic has discovered a way to exploit this inner demon as well. However, all of that is now behind him. Wolverine is poised and ready to demonstrate to the world why he’s the best there is at what he does.
Wolverine In Control of the Monster Is the Scariest Wolverine
Overcoming the monster within himself consistently triggers transformation for Wolverine, and the imagery of this struggle is quite powerful. The ominous aspect of Wolverine’s darker self appears formidable, like fragile rock, but when Wolverine confronts it, he dismantles it effortlessly. This serves as a compelling metaphor for Wolverine’s personal battle against his inner turmoil, demonstrating the immense strength Wolverine possesses compared to his internal struggles. It may seem tough and intimidating, but Wolverine will always be mightier than it provided he persists in the fight.
The situation is meticulously organized. Given that similar Wolverine plots have been seen before, it’s clear that author Condon and artist Alex Lins were determined to innovate. After all, I’ve encountered similar Wolverine tales numerous times throughout the years. So, they devised fresh approaches to keep the narrative engaging. Now, Wolverine has managed to free himself from the inner beast, along with the forces sustaining it, and appears eager for confrontation. The direction this comic book is heading seems quite intriguing.
Ultimate Wolverine #6 is on sale now.
