The dramatic finale of “Wolverine: Revenge” has been revealed, offering a surprising new chapter in Logan’s life that many fans won’t anticipate. This five-issue limited series is the brainchild of the acclaimed creative duo, Jonathan Hickman and Greg Capullo, and follows Wolverine as he battles numerous classic adversaries in a tale set outside of the main storyline that transcends generations. If you’re eager to witness Wolverine embarking on a vengeful journey, this book is definitely tailored for you. As we approached the climax, the burning question was “How would it all unfold?” Although we knew a showdown between Wolverine and Sabretooth was imminent, the role Logan adopts in the final pages of “Wolverine: Revenge” is an unexpected twist that none of us saw coming. BEWARE! Spoilers for Wolverine: Revenge #5 lie ahead!
In issue #5 of “Wolverine: Revenge,” the creative team consists of Jonathan Hickman, Greg Capullo, Tim Townsend, and Alex Sinclair. Initially, the story revolves around Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Colossus’ son Nikolai, who possesses the unique mutant ability to transform his skin into metal. Seeking retribution against Wolverine for a decades-old murder of his father, Nikolai teams up with a crippled Sabretooth. After swiftly dispatching Sabretooth, the confrontation between Wolverine and Nikolai escalates. Equipped with his aunt Illyana’s Soulsword, Nikolai shifts their battle from Earth to the supernatural realm of Limbo.
In a cunning deception, Wolverine makes Nikolai believe that he’s disabled his own healing factor using Forge’s device. This was Wolverine’s attempt to give Nikolai a square deal following the death of his father. Once Nikolai gained an advantage, he thrust the Soulsword into Wolverine, seemingly ending his life. However, since Wolverine manipulated the neutralizer, his powers remained intact. Nikolai may now find peace and continue with his life. But for Wolverine, moving on means establishing a base in Limbo. Each Hell has its ruler, and Wolverine intends to seize the throne as the new king.
Marvel makes Wolverine the new King of Hell
In essence, the underlying theme of “Wolverine: Revenge” wasn’t primarily about Logan seeking retribution against all his adversaries. Instead, it was about how his thirst for revenge would inevitably lead him to Limbo (or Hell). Given his inherent nature, any other outcome was improbable. Therefore, if Wolverine is receiving exactly what he merits, he decides to make the best of his situation by challenging for the throne of Hell. The last page of “Wolverine: Revenge” #5 depicts Wolverine marching towards Limbo’s throne, occupied by a demonic figure. As he enters the throne room, Wolverine declares, “Bad news… you’re sitting in my seat.
This comic series finale is fittingly dark as Wolverine, drenched in green demon blood, seeks to rule over Limbo. Given Wolverine’s life brimming with death and violence, it seems a natural conclusion for him. Fans have been exposed to various bleak futures involving Wolverine, with Old Man Logan being the most notorious tale. Wolverine: Revenge shares similar undertones but differs because Wolverine isn’t fleeing from his past. Instead, he acknowledges his nature, making him content with managing Limbo during his twilight years. Wolverine has experienced and accomplished so much in his lifetime. Why not spend his final days reigning over the demon underworld?
As a fan, I’m not expecting a sequel to “Wolverine: Revenge” anytime soon, given that Jonathan Hickman has his hands full these days with Marvel projects such as “Ultimate Spider-Man,” “Aliens vs. Avengers,” the upcoming “Imperial” cosmic event series, and wrapping up “Doom” and “G.O.D.S.” It’s intriguing to ponder about Wolverine’s reign in Hell, though. If he were king, what orders might he give to the demons? Who else from the deceased realm would be vying for a piece of the action, eager to establish themselves? The allure of power always attracts someone ready to make their mark. However, that someone often meets their match when they cross paths with a character like Wolverine.
