As a gamer and a longtime fan of Marvel movies, I was saddened to hear about the unfortunate incident that occurred during the filming of Wonder Man. The death of J.C. “Spike” Osorio is a tragic reminder that even in the glamorous world of superheroes, safety should never be compromised.
Disney has been hit with two fines totaling $36,000 due to the unfortunate incident involving a crew member on the set of Marvel’s “Wonder Man” series. On Friday, it was revealed that these penalties, each amounting to $18,000, were issued during the investigation into the death of lighting technician J.C. “Spike” Osorio. He passed away following a fall on the series’ Studio City set on February 6th at the Radford Studio Center. The subsequent Cal/OSHA investigation found that the catwalk where the incident occurred had deteriorated and was supported by rotten wood, which had been incorrectly secured. Additionally, the Radford Studio Center received two citations worth $22,500. Both companies have 15 business days to contest these findings at the Occupational Safety and Health Appeals Board. Since Osorio’s death in February, several studios are reported to have already strengthened their catwalks to improve safety on their sets.
“The old and worn-out record book may have been weakened by factors such as age, exposure to harsh conditions, and years of continuous strain. As a team member traversed the catwalks, an employee unfortunately stepped onto the weak part of it. Without any prior indication, the support for the floorboard beneath them gave way and fractured, causing the entire section to collapse while the employee was still standing there. The unfortunate individual fell 41 feet and landed hard on the surface below.”
Earlier this year, the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Osorio’s family against the Radford Studio Center had already been initiated. They claimed that the center should have known about the state of the catwalk, but the exact nature and extent of the damages in this lawsuit are yet to be defined.
As a concerned fan speaking about this heartbreaking incident, I can share that the citations from OSHA against Radford Studio Center corroborate the tragic conclusion that Mr. Osorio’s death was entirely preventable. In the words of his family’s attorney, Erika Contreras, she told Variety that these citations also underscore how Radford Studio Center neglected its non-delegable responsibility to maintain, repair, and inspect their premises properly. Regrettably, it was Mr. Osorio who suffered the gravest consequences due to Radford’s oversight.
