According to a report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, Warner Bros. Games has officially announced the closure of Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego. Additionally, the development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman project has been terminated.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “Recently, some tough choices have been made by the company. They’re focusing their game development studios and investments on strengthening our iconic franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC Comics, and Game of Thrones to create the best games possible. The decisions to shut down Monolith, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego were not made lightly; they were the result of thoughtful deliberation.
This shift isn’t about the quality of these teams or their individuals, but rather a tactical adjustment in our approach.
Concerning Wonder Woman, it’s unfortunate that we can no longer provide an exceptional experience as aligned with our current strategic goals.
Making this decision isn’t easy because we appreciate Monolith’s rich legacy of providing extraordinary gaming experiences that fans love. We hold the dedication of the three teams in high regard and express our gratitude to each employee for their significant contributions. Although today is challenging, we keep our sights set on resuming the creation of top-notch games for our enthusiastic fanbase, using our exceptional studios. Our goal remains getting our game business back on a profitable and expanding trajectory by 2025 and beyond.
News about the challenging production of “Wonder Woman” emerged recently, shedding light on its reboot scheduled for early 2024. Rumors suggest a hefty budget over $100 million, but the project has faced difficulties in coming together smoothly. Despite being some distance from release, there’s uncertainty if it will eventually see the light of day.
Regarding Player First Games, they’ve recently announced that they will be discontinuing the service for MultiVersus in May. This multiplayer fighting game received a mixed response after leaving open beta and contributed to a $100 million loss for WB Games. It’s worth noting that WB Games San Diego, founded in 2019 with the aim of creating free-to-play mobile games, hasn’t produced any tangible results yet.
