Wonder Woman Comic Writer Praises Monolith Productions, Warner Bros. Despite Cancellation

Following news that Warner Bros. Games has terminated the development of their Wonder Woman project at Monolith, comic writer Gail Simone has disclosed additional information regarding the game. On social media platform X, Simone penned a series of posts about the in-progress title, describing both Monolith and Warner Bros. Games as “eager and encouraging.

Simone served as a long-term consultant on the “Wonder Woman” project, a role she gladly accepted since she was an admirer of Monolith’s past Middle-earth series. Moreover, she shared that the progress on the “Wonder Woman” game went well, largely due to the dedicated team’s excellent contributions to the project.

Simone noted that the game was stunningly beautiful and vast. It was a visual delight. While she didn’t delve into specifics for various reasons, her intention was clear: to create a game that wasn’t just exceptional, but an outstanding ‘Wonder Woman’ game. A masterpiece worthy of being showcased.

Everything turned out so well due to the collective effort of our team. Each member contributed their best skills, from programmers and artists to designers. They were all deeply committed to ensuring the final outcome was flawless, a level of dedication I’ve rarely seen in other teams.

Simone commended the “Wonder Woman” game for its dedication to accurately representing the DC universe, as it respected the long-standing stories and rules established in the iconic comic book series.

She noted that every part of the game featured both “WW” and DC lore, which she found exhilarating and a privilege to be involved in. She expressed gratitude for working with them, as everyone from Monolith and Warner Bros. showed great enthusiasm and support throughout the project, all aiming to create an exceptional game together. Despite any criticism or blame being passed around, she emphasized that her experience was positive.

Even though the game was called off and the studio shut down, Simone acknowledges that the collaboration between the teams from both companies was fantastic.

Simone mentioned that while there seems to be a lot of blaming happening, she found everyone at Monolith and WB to be highly motivated and encouraging during their collaboration. Essentially, they all aimed for creating an exceptional game.

On occasion, you put in your utmost effort but things don’t go as planned,” she added. “Yet, that group was exceptional, and I can merely wish they keep creating outstanding games. Eventually, someone will recognize their talent and establish a new benchmark for the industry.

Simone is particularly recognized for her contribution to the storyline of Wonder Woman in the comic books. To date, she holds the record as the longest-serving female author on these comics.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Monolith Productions, the production company responsible for ‘Wonder Woman’, is closing down, along with Player First Games, the studio behind ‘MultiVersus’, and WB Games San Diego.

For quite some time, Monolith Productions had been a highly respected game development company, known for producing critically-adored games. Not only did they create recent hits such as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel Shadow of War, but they also have a rich history in the gaming industry, having worked on the F.E.A.R. series and the classic shooter No One Lives Forever in the past.
