As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but reflect on the possible factors that led to Monolith Productions shutting down and the cancellation of their highly anticipated Wonder Woman project. It’s been suggested that one significant factor could have been the commercial underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In a recent episode of Kinda Funny podcast, Jason Schrier from Bloomberg discussed WB Games during the tenure of its previous head, David Haddad.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but bring attention to a fascinating tidbit about Haddad’s leadership: during his time, he made a call that ultimately saw the termination of a fresh IP by Monolith, an endeavor which could have capitalized on an advanced Nemesis system reminiscent of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel. This move triggered a domino effect, as all directors at the studio chose to step down, resulting in the entire Wonder Woman project being rebooted from the ground up.
Previously, the “Wonder Woman” game planned to incorporate the Nemesis system, but its development underwent another restart approximately a year ago. Now, instead of being an open-world game, it will be a linear action game.
Schrier notes that the decision came too little, too late, as the unsuccessful launches of live-service games featuring licensed characters such as “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” and “MultiVersus” had already placed WB Games in a challenging position.
Schreier stated, “However, by that point, the situation had become quite dire for Warner Brothers Games, given how disastrous last year turned out to be. To be specific, ‘Suicide Squad’ was a massive disappointment, causing them to lose around $200 million. On top of that, ‘MultiVersus’ and ‘Quidditch Champions’, both failed projects, resulted in another $100 million in losses.
This year, Haddad relinquished his position as president at WB Games, a post he held for 12 years. Taking over from him is JB Perrette, who currently serves as both the CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery’s international streaming and game division.
Perrette stated that David had carefully selected a moment in our calendar when there’s less pressure on our releases, making it easier to avoid disrupting our current projects and strategic goals while the team could smoothly transition towards their upcoming blockbuster project.
As a gamer, I’ve learned that Monolith Productions, along with Player First Games and WB Games San Diego, have closed down – all under the umbrella of WB Games. Warner Bros. made these tough calls to reorganize their development studios and investments, focusing on creating top-tier games for their flagship franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC Comics, and Game of Thrones.
Gail Simone, comic writer, has recently shared positive remarks about her extended collaboration with the studio on the Wonder Woman project. On platform X, she commended both the studio and Warner Bros., expressing that they were both eager and helpful during her tenure as a consultant.
Simone wrote that the game was both stunning and vast in scope. It was visually appealing, and she chose not to delve into specifics for various reasons. However, it was more than just a fantastic game; it aimed to be an exceptional game inspired by Wonder Woman, serving as a grand spectacle.
Everything turned out so well due to the collective effort of our team. Each member, whether a programmer, artist, or designer, gave their absolute best. It’s hard to recall another team that was as dedicated to ensuring the final outcome was flawless.
