Wonder Woman TV Show Gets an Exciting Update (& How It’s Connected to the Movie)

The DC Universe is gradually approaching Themyscira, though perhaps not as quickly as some fans might prefer. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn discussed the broader plans for the DCU, including projects that have been in development since their initial announcement, such as “Paradise Lost,” which explores life on Wonder Woman‘s enchanted island home Themyscira prior to Diana’s birth. Gunn confirmed that the project is still being developed and progress is ongoing. He also attempted to clarify the show’s relationship to the recently-announced Wonder Woman film, in characteristic James Gunn style.

I’m making progress with “Paradise Lost,” though it’s moving at a leisurely pace. Truth be told, I’m deeply invested in this project. When queried about the connection between this show and my plans for Wonder Woman in the DCU, I hesitated but then said, “Well, yes and no.” Wonder Woman has her own storyline that is being scripted currently, so it’s unique, yet not entirely separate. After all, she hails from Themyscira, so there’s definitely a connection.

It’s understandable that Gunn might come across as straightforward and unsure in this interview, given that he just revealed that the Wonder Woman movie is being developed. He clarified that the project is currently in the scriptwriting stage. Previously, only the Paradise Lost Wonder Woman-related project was known to be underway at the DCU, which caused some confusion when Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav mentioned that Wonder Woman was one of the four cornerstones of the DCU, alongside Superman, Batman, and Supergirl.

Indeed, I agree with that assessment,” Gunn noted in response to the question. “I believe he derived that sentiment from me. While I wouldn’t limit it to just those four characters, I would emphasize that these four characters are crucially significant to us. At present, I’m quite confident about the progress of two of these characters, and we’re currently managing the other two.

It’s been confirmed that Wonder Woman won’t be appearing in the series titled “Paradise Lost”. This announcement was made back in January 2023, alongside other plans for the DC Universe (DCU). James Gunn and his DC Studios co-CEO have described this show as a political thriller, similar to Game of Thrones. The storyline will unfold on Themyscira prior to Wonder Woman’s birth, and it seems to be inspired by a 2001 comic book series called “Paradise Island Lost”, penned by Phil Jiminez and George Pérez.

At this point, it’s uncertain who is handling the production of “Paradise Lost” or the currently unnamed Wonder Woman film. We also don’t have any information about when either project might be released. However, mark your calendars for July 11th as that’s when we’ll see the DCU make its debut on the big screen with the premiere of “Superman”.
