In Wonder Woman #20, we delve into a divine murder mystery as Hippolyta is implicated in Ares’ death. This prompts Wonder Woman to enlist Batman’s help, and together they work to unravel this crime. Lately, Wonder Woman has been grappling with her own struggles – the conflict with the Sovereign has ended, but readers have glimpsed the dire future known as the Wonder War. At present, dealing with the Greek deities is far from enjoyable for her. From the start of this issue, it’s clear that Wonder Woman harbors resentment towards the gods she has served almost all her life – she despises them.
It’s quite logical. Wonder Woman discusses how deities often manipulate mortals for their amusement, a concept that is prevalent in most religions. What sets Wonder Woman apart is her profound affection for those around her, be it friends or regular people. Despite witnessing the gods perform miraculous feats, she has also seen them commit unspeakable atrocities. Given her past, one might expect Wonder Woman to harbor resentment towards the divine, but that’s not the case.
Wonder Woman’s Life Has Been Defined by the Gods’ Hubris
In my humble opinion as a movie aficionado, the story unfolds when Wonder Woman and Batman receive an unexpected summons from Zeus himself, requiring a sacrifice before they can meet him. This proposition doesn’t sit well with Wonder Woman, leading her to physically confront the messenger who delivers it, spilling his blood as the required offering. As events progress, she assists Batman in interrogating Dionysus, the god of pleasure, resorting to brutal force to extract information. It’s not uncommon for us to see Wonder Woman take on gods physically, but this time it’s different – it seems she’s fed up with their malicious ways.
Throughout her life, Wonder Woman has been subjected to the whims of the gods more times than one can count. To put it into modern perspective, these gods could be seen as wealthy oligarchs who demand obedience while breaking every rule for personal gain. They’re the epitome of foolishness and greed, constantly seeking love and admiration, and Wonder Woman has had enough of their antics. Frankly, who wouldn’t?
In the perspective of many fans, Ares’ actions serve as potential reasons for Wonder Woman to harbor resentment towards the gods. However, when it comes to Greek mythology, it is Zeus who poses the greatest challenge. The depiction of Zeus in “Wonder Woman” #20 is that of a lethargic monarch, fully aware of his unmatched power. From the outset, there’s an air of arrogance surrounding Zeus, a quality that aligns with fans’ perceptions of the god from stories such as “Wonder Woman: Historia: The Amazons.” Each deity appears as a reckless hedonist in the series, which is quite accurate. Gods have always been complex figures in human culture; they are both givers and causes of suffering. Zeus is like an uncontrollable child, while Odin uses his influence to manipulate others whenever possible. Even the Christian God has chosen to afflict those who believe in Him with hardship. Wonder Woman embodies love, but the gods personify a different emotion – one that often leads to the worst life has to offer. Are they deserving of adoration or scorn? Given her character, it’s easy to understand why Wonder Woman chooses disdain.
Wonder Woman’s Hatred of the Gods Is Well-Earned
As a devotee, I’ve always admired Wonder Woman as one of the stalwarts defending the divine realm in the DC Universe. It might seem logical that her ties with these gods would be amicable at least. However, it’s crucial to remember that Wonder Woman was nurtured within a society born out of a conflict against Zeus for the very right to thrive. This long-standing animosity towards the gods stems from decades of witnessing their ruthless actions driven by self-glorification. And she’s absolutely correct in her assessment.
Almost every known human religion suggests that gods can be unpredictable. They crave devotion and amusement, treating people as mere sources of these things. We plead to them and endure their contests. For a character like Wonder Woman, who acknowledges the existence of gods and cherishes humanity, this is an alarming state of affairs. Despite being their staunch protector, she would gladly see them all disappear if granted the opportunity.
