World of Warcraft 'The War Within' story overview: What players need to know

As a seasoned adventurer who has delved into the depths of Azeroth and beyond, I can’t help but feel a shiver of anticipation down my spine as I read about the upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: The War Within. The Radiant Song, this enigmatic melody that seems to echo with a cry for help from Azeroth itself, is a mystery that has piqued my curiosity since its introduction.

In the near future, players will set off on another mission to protect the realm of Azeroth from malevolent forces in World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, World of Warcraft: The War Within. In this highly anticipated PC game, a shadowy antagonist named Xal’atath the Harbinger is plotting to destroy Azeroth, and an enigmatic ‘Radiant Song’ is summoning its most powerful heroes to delve into the heart of the world.

Whether you’re a fresh recruit diving into World of Warcraft for the first time or an old soldier back after a lengthy hiatus, chances are you’re curious about how we arrived at this current state of affairs. Rest assured, because we’ve put together a summary of the key events that have shaped the world leading up to World of Warcraft: The War Within. This will help you grasp what you’re fighting for and keep up with the ongoing story, so you can become fully immersed in the epic tale.

World of Warcraft The War Within: General premise

In the realm of Warcraft lies Azeroth, a once vibrant fantasy land that’s been scarred by years of conflict between its dominant groups, the Horde and the Alliance. On occasion, these adversaries have momentarily set aside their enmity to confront shared threats such as the undead armies summoned by the Lich King, the devastating dragon Deathwing, and the Burning Legion led by Sargeras, a Titan of darkness.

Sargeras is particularly noteworthy as he sought to destroy Azeroth as he believed that its Worldsoul (essentially the soul of a planet that has the potential to be reborn into a god-like entity called a Titan) would spell doom for the entire universe if the Old Gods and their Void Lord masters corrupted it. The Old Gods are a group of disgusting eldritch horrors created by Sargeras’ afforementioned arch-enemies, the Void Lords, a race of evil shadow gods bent on consuming all energy in the universe.

In the final moments of World of Warcraft: Legion, Sargeras came close to obliterating Azeroth by piercing the planet with his own sword. However, in a stunning turn of events, the players, along with beloved Warcraft figure, Illidan Stormrage, managed to thwart Sargeras’ plan and save their world.

In time, there ensued the chaotic occurrences of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, where once more the Horde and Alliance joined forces to prevent the malevolent Jailor from destroying both the world and the afterlife. After this peril was overcome, they recognized that their ongoing conflict had lasted far too long and established a true ceasefire, allowing them to devote their efforts to restoring their ravaged lands.

In the current era of peace, an extraordinary event known as the ‘Luminous Melody’ or the ‘Radiant Song’ is resonating across the realm of Azeroth. This enigmatic occurrence influences specific individuals with cryptic visions and a voice that is strangely familiar yet unknown, prompting them to journey towards the core of the world. Notable figures like Thrall, Anduin, and others have been touched by this luminous melody, rallying together Azeroth’s most distinguished heroes (including you) for an expedition deep into the heart of Azeroth to uncover the source of this mysterious song.

While investigating the mysterious Radiant Song, our protagonists have encountered an old menace resurfacing as “The Harbinger,” Xal’atath. This shadowy antagonist seeks destruction for Azeroth by mobilizing subterranean spider-like creatures called Nerubians to invade the surface. Simultaneously, she is concocting secretive plots in the background. As such, our heroes must not only delve into the origins of the Radiant Song but also decipher Xal’atath’s intentions and thwart both her schemes and the escalating Nerubian uprising.

World of Warcraft The War Within: Who is Xal’atath the Harbinger?

As an analyst, I find myself continually intrigued by Xal’atath, an enigma wrapped in cosmic mystery. While her true intentions and nature remain veiled, what we can discern is that she is an ancient entity connected to the Void, a primordial extraterrestrial force controlled by the Void Lords. Her association with the abyssal depths of space suggests a profound connection to the cosmos itself.

A long time ago, the malevolent power of Xal’atath was imprisoned within a cursed weapon known as the Blade of the Black Empire (Xal’atath), a blade that WoW: Legion players could obtain during the Shadow Priest Artifact questline in the Legion expansion. This weapon had the ability to communicate with its wielder, and due to this unique feature, it quickly became popular among fans, potentially paving the way for an extended role within the game’s overall narrative.

Later in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, Xal’atath broke free from her imprisonment on the blade by striking a bargain with the ancient deity N’Zoth. This is the same being that players ultimately defeated at the end of the Battle for Azeroth expansion. However, there are doubts about whether N’Zoth is truly gone, as it has a history of exploiting Azeroth’s powers to manipulate events.

After the agreement was finalized and she was freed from her association with the sword known as Xal’atath, this sword took over the lifeless body of a high elf girl named Inasis. Leaving the player in peril, it was then. Miraculously, the player found a way to escape the trap and eventually defeated N’Zoth.

It’s still uncertain what Xal’atath truly aims for, but it’s clear she assembles a horde of ferocious Nerubians. What we do know is that her plans revolve around a potent artifact in her custody known as the Dark Heart. This artifact was once owned by Iridikron, a formidable proto-dragon and a major adversary in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight.

The Dark Heart is just as mysterious as Xal’atath, but we do know that it has the power to convert magic into shadow energy and that it possesses the essence of Galakrond. Galakrond was a humongous proto-dragon that threatened to consume all life on Azeroth, but was destroyed by the dragon Aspects eons ago. Galakrond is something of a legend in Warcraft lore, whose gigantic skeleton can be found by players half-excavated in Northrend. The Scourge was attempting to resurrect Galakrond as an unimaginably powerful undead frostwyrm, but this proved too much even for the powers of the Scourge to pull off.

In the lifeless realm of Azeroth, Iridikron allied with the time-jumping Infinite Dragonflight. Together they journeyed to the remnants of Galakrond, intending to extract his departing spirit. The ravenous energy of Galakrond, consuming everything in its path, was transferred into the Dark Heart by Iridikron as part of a pact he struck with Xal’atath. Iridikron harbors intense hatred towards the celestial beings known as the Titans, considering them extraterrestrial conquerors who corrupted Azeroth and its inhabitants. The Titans, who shaped and organized Azeroth during its early epochs, stand in stark ideological contrast to the destructive and chaotic powers of the Void.

Many cosmic conflicts revolve around the powerful planet Azeroth, whose unique combination of immense size and rich spirit energy makes it highly sought after by cosmic entities. This energy was absorbed by Azeroth, making it the most potent Worldsoul in the known universe, which has attracted powerful beings such as the Titans, Void Lords, and the now largely-defeated Burning Legion. The Burning Legion, in their pursuit of Azeroth’s power, managed to create a corrupted Worldsoul in the form of Argus, but it was ultimately destroyed by players. At present, no known instance exists where the Void has successfully corrupted and enlisted another Worldsoul, but that is the very thing we seem to be attempting to prevent in this expansion.

Chapter 3: What is the Radiant Song?

Similar to Xal’atath and the Dark Heart, the Radiant Song remains a puzzle waiting to be unraveled. However, we do have hints about its potential character. As suggested by various Warcraft figures like Thrall, Jaina Proudmoore, Anduin, and Magni Bronzebeard, the visions from the Radiant Song seem to convey a sense of impending danger, as if Azeroth’s Worldsoul is urgently calling for aid.

The idea that the Radiant Song is a plea for assistance is supported by the character Locus Walker, a Void-Ethereal, who made his debut in World of Warcraft: Legion. This suggests that the Locus Walker’s presence may offer additional evidence supporting this interpretation.

In the course of the Dark Heart Patch adventure, the player joins high elf huntress Alleria Windrunner to explore the Dark Heart and Xal’atath. The Locus Walker shares that his planet underwent an event similar to the Radiant Song. Unfortunately, his people arrived too late to understand its significance as their world was swiftly destroyed by a Void Lord named Dimensius, who emerged approximately two decades ago during The Burning Legion expansion. Back then, Dimensius was of minor importance, but due to this questline, he has taken on a far more significant role.

I, standing by, can’t help but feel a sense of impending dread regarding Azeroth. It seems that the enigmatic artifact, Xal’atath, may once more play a pivotal role in the unfolding events.

Will you answer the call of the Radiant Song and stop Xal’atath from destroying Azeroth?

In this World of Warcraft: The War Within game, you’ll find a narrative filled with enigmas for players to explore while battling Xal’atath’s horde of Nerubians. From my perspective, I anticipate that an ancient or returning Old God is hidden within the depths of Khaz Algar’s caves, and that Xal’atath aims to utilize the Dark Heart in a ritual to break its imprisonment, ultimately releasing Galakrond’s insatiable power across the world.

It seems to me that perhaps Azeroth’s Worldsoul detected Xal’atath’s plan to liberate an ancient deity, the Old God, and is now appealing to Azeroth’s heroes using the Radiant Song, urging them to thwart Xal’atath before it’s too late. Furthermore, this might be the reason behind Sargeras’ attempt to obliterate Azeroth with his sword; he may have sensed a sinister Old God presence that was dangerously close to Azeroth’s Worldsoul.

It’s quite plausible that Xal’atath might be an independent entity from the Void, leveraging the power of the Void Lords for her personal goals. Her actions in Battle for Azeroth suggested a lack of interest in assisting N’Zoth, the creature spawned by the Void Lords, in defeating the players. There are several other malevolent beings associated with the Void that could reappear. The whereabouts of Queen Azshara remain unknown, and what Iridikron is up to is a mystery. Could we possibly witness the return of Sire Denathrius and his Dreadlords as well? These are intriguing possibilities to consider.

There are several questions yet to be answered: Does Galakrond’s spirit within the Dark Heart have a part to play in Xal’atath’s schemes, or could it possibly be reborn into a new form? Is the Radiant Song truly a cry for aid from Azeroth? What exactly is Xal’atath, and what ancient force sealed her away within that blade so long ago? What does Xal’atath seek in the end, and what was Sargeras trying to achieve when he wounded Azeroth with that blade?

Embark on an epic journey to the heart of Azeroth and uncover the truth behind these intriguing mysteries as World of Warcraft: The War Within, Blizzard Entertainment’s tenth expansion for their popular PC game series, debuts on August 26, 2024.
