In a recent interview with IGN, actor Anthony Mackie expressed his discomfort with the headpiece he wore in the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Apparently, this cowl – though faithful to the comic books – wasn’t comfortable for him. It seems that this unwelcome accessory will not appear in Captain America: Brave New World, a decision made based on Mackie’s preference, as he humorously put it, “Because I told them that I was never wearing that nonsense again.
He continued, expressing it wasn’t easy. The intense heat, the sweating, the foggy spectacles made it unbearable, almost impossible. They referred to it as a cowl, but for him, it was his most dreaded scenario. It seemed utterly hopeless.
In his crime-fighting endeavors, Sam Wilson, as the Falcon, has consistently donned a pair of tinted flight goggles. However, when he underwent a costume transformation at the conclusion of his Disney+ series, he significantly upgraded his headgear. This new ensemble included a partial mask attached to his goggles, hugging his neck, cheeks, and temples, while leaving his ears and top of his head uncovered. As Mackie shared, this mask was a considerable nuisance, even for the brief period he wore it during the series.
In comic books, the cowl on Sam Wilson’s Captain America costume was true to classic portrayals; however, it was wise for filmmakers to adapt flexibly rather than strictly adhere to the source material. The full-head covering might seem impressive in a comic artist’s hands, but practicality becomes an issue when brought to live-action. It’s challenging to envision why a flying hero would neglect protecting his ears after meticulously covering other body parts.
Mackie might want to get used to wearing his costume since he has quite a few years ahead of him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming “Brave New World” is just around the corner, and it’s been confirmed that Sam Wilson will appear not only in “Avengers: Secret Wars” but also in “Avengers: Doomsday”. There are possibilities for unexpected appearances in numerous other MCU productions until then. After the Multiverse Saga ends, he may still have a role to play within the franchise. Mackie himself seems optimistic about this, expressing his hope to portray Sam for another ten years.
On this coming Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14th, you can catch “Captain America: Brave New World” in theaters. In case you missed them, previous Marvel Cinematic Universe titles are currently streaming on Disney+, such as “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier“.
