The characters of Wuthering Heights, Catherine and Heathcliff, seem inseparable, yet the casting director for the upcoming movie believes that viewers can still appreciate the production even if the principal actors don’t perfectly match the physical descriptions from the book.
Following criticism over the casting of Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi in the upcoming movie scheduled for a theatrical release on February 13, 2026, casting director Kharmel Cochrane is now justifying their selections.
In a Q&A session at the Sands Film Festival in Scotland on April 26, I shared that if something appears to be white or explicit in a script, such as ‘she tied her blonde hair back,’ without a specific reason being provided, I simply choose to go with it. Then, almost as if challenging someone to question my decision, they usually don’t. Over time, this choice becomes the norm for me. In the past, people would ask, “did you read the brief?” To which I would respond affirmatively and explain that my interpretation of it is much like reading a book.
Critics have raised concerns about the age suitability and ethnicity in the cast selection for the film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s romance novel. Some felt that Robbie, aged 34, was too old to portray 18-year-old Catherine Earnshaw, while others argued that Elordi’s fair complexion doesn’t fit with Heathcliff, the textual description of whom as a “dark-skinned” foster son of the Earnshaw family. Furthermore, some expressed their dissatisfaction quite strongly.
Cochrane mentioned an Instagram comment suggesting the casting director should face some form of punishment. However, he humorously invited people to wait and see the work before deciding if they might want to criticize him instead. He emphasized that it’s just a fictional story and not based on real-life events; it’s merely creative expression.
In my professional opinion, some social media users have expressed doubts about the historical authenticity of the actors’ appearances, suggesting they seem more suited to contemporary roles rather than portraying characters from the 1847 novel.
The original poster didn’t mean any disrespect to Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, but they don’t seem to embody the tormented personalities needed for Cathy and Heathcliff in a ‘Wuthering Heights’ adaptation. They were suggesting that the actors should be more eccentric or unconventional.
A different user has expressed, “Though I believe both Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie suffer from a strong case of ‘iPhone Face’, I’ll still attend the production of ‘Wuthering Heights’.
